Sports Ministry Places Late Rashidi Yekini’s Mother On N10,000 Monthly Stipend

The Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has placed Alhaja Sikiratu, the mother of late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini on a monthly stipend of N10,000.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by Olaitan Shittu, a representative of the Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, during a visit to Alhaja Yekini in Ijagbo, Kwara State.Shittu also donated N50,000 as part of the Ramadan gifts to the septuagenarian on behalf of the minister.

Also donated with the cash was a 50kg bag of rice, 10kg bag of wheat and six tins of Milo beverage drink.

Shittu said that the ministry would also be extending the same gesture to the mother of late Super Eagles player, Samuel Okwaraji.

Alhaja Yekini, who spoke in her local dialect (Yoruba), thanked the minister for the kind gesture.
She said, “I was hospitalised for few days some months ago and I did cater for myself despite scarce resources.
“I need help from Nigerians, but this minister has done very well, especially remembering me in this holy month of Ramadan.
Since my son died, it has been very tough for me because I do not have any help from people.
Rashidi’s siblings are not doing well too, so, I was left to struggle for life every day.”

The late Yekini died in 2012 at the age of 48 after retiring from football.

  5. One more reason to regret being a Nigerian!
10k? They should have at least upgraded her to the level of a Corps Member and placed her on #33,000.

It's high time our government started caring for our athletes after retirement. What it this?...

It's not Government's responsibility to put her on any monthly stipend but appreciate the little gesture. Haba

  10. What can 10k a month do for an elderly woman?

  11. 10k for buying crayfish abi is for buying salt, they should have given her 50k to 100k. Haba 10k is too small.

    1. Yes,they can do better but they have to start from somewhere.

If for all these years no one did any and now someone is doing something then it's a good step. So from here we can talk about better.

    2. True talk. Except they want to start paying all mothers of super Eagles players both dead and alive. For Sam Okwaraji Though his case is different, he died in acrive service for Nigeria.

    3. Alternative facts, I hope you are not talking from both sides of your mouth. Rashid I Yekini died hungry, broke, down and out with mental health challenges even. As a retiree, what did the government do for him?
Samuel Okwaraji died in active service in 1989 which was 31yrs ago, and they're just remembering his mother?

Once again, it's quite regrettable being a Nigerian!...

  19. Ten thousand Naira ke? So after she pays basic electricity bill of Five thousand Naira, what is left for feeding , medicals etc

  20. ...except for Okwaraji that died in active service.Yekini made money but was duped investmentwise....whatever money is given is in good jesture. Nigeria hasn't even paid workers and pensioners. Stephen Keshi was owed till he died, Samson Siasia's mum was kidnapped, Nigeria could not help. All those players in active service now should start saving money now and investing to help their families. The reason I like Okocha and Kanu.

  21. We should at least appreciate people’s effort and not entitlement mentality. The footballer didn’t die on service them try abegiiii
