Couch Convo - Native Names And Their Meanings....

Different parts of the World have native names and awesome meanings attached to them.......

What part of the world and tribe are you what is your native name? Can we discuss the meaning and how it affects your life?I mean has your native name has a negative or positive impact on your life.

-Was there a reason you were given this name?A story behind it?

I am one of those people with a unique native name and the meaning chases me up and down like a broom waiting to flog me if i sit down...

My unique native name was given when my parents lived in a shared compound.I was born into rivalry among neighbours who were using their kids to fight.....According to what i heard, the other people birthed a light skinned girl child and all before me by my parents were as black as night and they used it to taunt them,I arrived with the brightness of the sun,and even lighter than the neighbor's child...

Daddy mi allegedly looked up to God and said to his neighbour in a boastful way ''The other one did it,is it me that cannot do it?If you can do it,i can do it even better'' thus my name was birthed...Odeko'ru'kome?...My name is pronounced with a question mark..if you know Isoko very well, you will understand the name after reading the story...

So my name impacts on my positively but pressure on me Sometimes because it controls me...I always ask myself ''Odeko'ru'kome?''
I always wanna be the best (not the first),always wanna stand out, always wanna be loud...........
LOL

  1. Chinonso meaning God is near/close.
My mom said she had always loved that name and vowed to give it to her child either boy or girl.
So far, so good, God has always been close to me. Whenever I need anything, just one call and he answers.

    3. Two names I so love is sopuluchukwu and Ujunwa/Obianuju. My husband never allowed me to name any of our children, but he allowed his mother. Very wicked and mean man. All the ujus and sopulu's I've met are awesome but often fat.
My don't like my name at all 'ndidi', I usually go by my English name though...

Wow @anon, i love those names too.Obiageli/ujunwa/obianuju almost mean the same thing.I have never seen a poor obiageli(means came to eat/enjoy).They also tend to marry well. The uju's i've seen are not all fat,but yes they also tend to never lack and they are very generous.though Obiageli is getting outdated to me.

It drives me even when I want to give up. My mum told me why she called me so and it's amazing. When I am faced with challenge, when things seems difficult and impossible, right from inside of me, I recall my name and usually, a strange burst of oxygen, energy and fierceness possesses me. I have an English name (my dad's ex-girlfriend's name- never trust men, even the holiest can fall in love and may never fall out of it) and use for professional/official reasons only. My true identity lies in my name and heritage. Native names are deep, rich and lovely. My kids, have both but deliberately, the native names override so they dont forget their root and source.

    9. Why do you call my name Native?
You ask for my name, I say Chidi
      Then you ask me,
      What is your English name?

Why do I need an English name?
I don't hear Simon being asked for his "Native" name?

My name is who I am,
      A reflection of my ancestry,
A representation of my birth journey
      And now my timeless reality,
An endless journey of my creator showing up again and again

I don't need you to shorten it,
For then you take away it's meaning.
It needs no addition, explanation or clarification
      It simply is.

      My name is Chidi,
      It's not native,
      It's not indigenous
      It's not substandard
A middle name is not required
      Why?
      Because it's my name

      My name is Chidi
      What's yours?

I gave myself one native name sha and the name is INYENE-ABASI which means God's possession. I gave myself that name out of the understanding that I am not made for myself, i am made for God, to bring praise, glory and honour to Him. I am God's own. Though I've not made it official but I hope to do so soonest. The day I wanted to choose the name, it was my parents who helped in translating it into our language.

°When it was time to register junior WAEC I gave my self an English name by force, name - PROMISE.

°Got admitted into UNIUYO, then I realised the pattern of naming was a norm there, I gradually accepted myself, still in this same school I neva hear person bear my name before all through my registration.
° One faithful night class like that in year 2, a colleague called my name to collect something,I responded to him and that was it.
°Few mins later a lady walked up to me and asked if the name I was called was my real name because she is my namesake and that's the first time she saw someone bear same name.
°After how many years, I felt I wasn't an alien πŸ‘Ύ Sha, even Facebook I searched then I no see the name, God come present me with one just like that, I fell in love ❤️❤️ with my name for the 1st time 😍😍.

  38. I don't have any foreign name, in fact all of the names given to me were out of the cirmustances surrounding my conception, the pregnancy and birth, because they found it difficult to conceive. When they finally did, the doctors adviced them to take it out as the baby wouldn't surive and if the bady did, the baby will be deformed ( here I am complete, nothing missing, nothing broken) obviously they went against the advice. I was born prematurely, the smallest preterm baby born that day and doctors were certain I wasn't going to survive this, but my mas faith was still up, God did his work.Glory to God!
My first name means God has speared my life ( does it affect me, oh yes it does! I can't name how many times I have thrived in unfavorable circumstances. One time a complete stranger was amazed at how I escaped, when the person heard my name, she was like I see why now.
The another meanings the power of God made manifest, there is one that means pushed forth into the existence. Another, triumphant warrior. My names have been the testimony of my life

  47. My native name is Walekoghene(from isoko, Delta state). It means "let us pray to God"
My mum said all the time she delivered my older siblings, my dad was always away at work(something he's so happy about). My own time(5th child) he, unfortunately, was in town. So while my mum was in the labor room, he was outside hearing her screams. He was so scared that he kept asking other patients to help him pray to GodπŸ˜‚

    So thus came my name!
