Recall that the Federal Ministry of Education had on Saturday met with officials of the West African Examination Council in Abuja and resolved to announce a new date for the examination.
The Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, had also said the government would consult with the four other countries under WAEC to set a new date, while announcing COVID-19 mandatory guidelines for schools which must be kept before July 29.
The ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, who made the recommendations in an interview with Punch, said no reasonable government would take such chances unless parents would be told to sign an undertaking.
Ogunyemi said, “Look, Kenya has said they have closed all their schools till next year (2021); they too have exams to write. Safety first. If it means closing the schools until next year to safeguard the lives of Nigerian children and safeguard the health of all Nigerians, so be it.
“So, if that will help us to address cases that can lead to increase in mortality, I think Nigerians should go that way and all of us should see reason for it. If they need to cancel admission for the year, it is good for them. Life matters first, people must have life first before they can go to university. Are the universities ready to work now?
“Our position is that they should not experiment with the lives of our children. Nobody can tell; the situation may soon normalise and they can do their exams and there is another opportunity for external candidates around November. So, it’s not as if the door is totally closed.”

Much as I feel bad for private school teachers, I support ASUU because you can never trust Nigerians not to cut corners in everything just to make more profit.
DeleteWill all these private schools, take their time to monitor these students and put all the needed equipments in place? I doubt if all will. Is the government ready to spend money for the unity schools and other government schools to put all the needed equipments in place before resumption? I don't think so either. It is better to leave children at home to continue online classes while the stakeholders put the necessary equipments in place even if it means on 2021. Government should meet with WAEC so that the exams can be postponed. It is better late than sorry.
This is rubbish, ASUU you guys didn't do well.

ReplyDeleteBut covid 19 is virulent and dangerous epidemics no one prepared for. In most Western world they did not write their GCSCE too. So is not only in Nigeria. Oxford and Cambridge University will not reopen until 2021. So it is an unprecedented time which all needs to be careful, this should not be about sentiment. Because no a single known drug has been found for this ravaging virus,it is only when you are alive and healthy that you can progress and prosper.

DeleteDon I agree with you 💯. I government has failed us no doubt but are we going to put innocent lives at risk just because of money? They are shouting that students should be allowed to write WAEC. All the boarding schools how do they manage? This is a great lesson to the government to begin to adopt distance learning in full scale not the type in Nigeria where students still have to go to the Study Centres for registration, clearance and examination. Let it be strictly online. Introduce it as a course and let teachers be trained on how to move teaching online.

ReplyDeleteHow many schools can afford bottles of disinfectants and do they have enough space for social distancing in classes? I would be very worried if my kids were to attend school in such vulnerable conditions.
@Chinaza, I understand how you feel but it's not all students that are missing out. I wish your school adopted the online schooling. My kids' school did and they have been able to cover the third term study schedule to a large extent. Google classrooms and zoom are great tools for teaching, it may not be 100% as effective as sitting in a physical classroom but it has gone a long way to keep the children busy and tutors get paid. I hope things look up for you. Keep your head up.
