Festus Keyamo Vows Not To Let Politicians Hijack 774,000 Jobs

Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, on Saturday, July 18, assured that the Special Public Works programme, SPW will not be hijacked by politicians.

In fact, the Minister disclosed that politicians from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will not select candidates..

Keyamo disclosed this in a tweet posted on his verified Twitter handle.

”I have NOT directed that forms for the SPW be distributed to APC Ward leaders to give to party members. Any of such list will be discountenanced. THIS IS NOT AN APC PROGRAMME but a programme FOR ALL NIGERIANS. We shall ONLY accept final lists from the States’ Selection Committees.”

Also, he warned against messages asking Nigerians to go and register at the state offices of National Directorate of Employment (NDE).

In another tweet, the minister said such a directive would breach the COVID-19 guideline.

He assured that the selection would be done at local government levels and not at NDE state offices.

“Kindly disregard all messages directing people to go to NDE offices to register for the Special Public Works.

“This will breach COVID-19 guidelines; and it will not ensure we strictly achieve 1000 per LGA. The selection will be done from LGA to LGA, not in States’ NDE offices,” Keyamo tweeted:
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari says ministers and all heads of departments and agencies should at all times; conduct themselves in ways that will not undermine the National Assembly as an institution, its leadership and members.

President Buhari said this on Thursday when he received in audience Senate President Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila at the State House, Aso Villa, Abuja.

He said that any disrespect to the institution by any member of the executive branch would not be accepted.

The meeting, which lasted for almost an hour, was characterized by an engaging discussion on a range of key issues of national importance particularly the role of the legislature as a critical component in supporting their common goal and commitment towards improving the lives of the people of Nigeria.

Keyamo had on June 30, clashed with the federal lawmakers when he appeared before the joint committees of the National Assembly on Labour to brief them on the recruitment of 774,000 youths under the Special Public Works programme (SPW).

    2. The legislature is the true representative of the people. They know their constituents. It should be their call. Their input is very important. They should be fully consulted. They are closer to the grassroots
