South Africa’s public schools will close again for a month from Monday to limit the spread of coronavirus as the country grapples with surging infections, President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday.

The country has now recorded 408,052 coronavirus cases, the fifth-highest in the world. More than 6,000 people have died from the virus.

Rising infections have caused concern among teaching staff, with unions calling on the government to revoke its decision to reopen schools for certain grades in June.

“Cabinet has decided today that all public schools should take a break for the next four weeks,” Ramaphosa said during an address to the nation, adding that the academic year that is due to end in December would be extended.

Schools will be closed from 27 July and scheduled to reopen on August 24.

“We have taken a deliberately cautious approach to keep schools closed during a period when the country is expected to experience its greatest increase in infections,” Ramaphosa said.

The president also announced a “historic” R500 billion ($30 billion) social relief and economic support package to fund the health response and assist “those in greatest need”.

ReplyDeleteEducation is key but being alive is more important. Countries with high death rate should just forget about this year's academic session esp. students in junior classes. The junior and senior waec students may proceed with their exams with the necessary precautions.

ReplyDeleteThis is the fear we all have especially as parents. Oyo state government should be prepared o, it's a daunting task managing kids and social distancing. They better do their homework well. Whenever Lagos state make it's own decision to open, I will decide on where I stand.

DeleteThanks Sucre, my kids'school run online classes so they are fully occupied. They have been able to cover the third term syllabus and are about to start exams. I believe they will propose online option when schools open for the next section, so we'll see how it goes.
DeleteMy advice to Nigerian students,find something doing from now till December because school is likely not to resume till next year,instead of waiting on this clueless government,get busy and not waste the remaining five 5 months,peace✌️

ReplyDeleteHmm ,Nigeria government take note o, no resumption until the curve is straighten please o, and I think government should step into the case of private school teachers, all the money they are looting can be used to pay them their monthly salary, or how do they want them to survive???? Plenty of them are going through a lot, I know a couple who both works in private school,thank God the husband is not a lazy man, he's now driving keke,very gentle man , it is well
