COMMUNITY GIST

Throw back to the year 2009. The year things changed in my community. We had this very far Farm.. Going there with bike or bicycle would take one 2/3hrs. Imagine how long it would take if You're going there on foot. That was how far it was. But my people cared less. Cos, the land was overly fertile. My grandpa being the hardworking man he was, would spend the whole day. You get to see the dividends of his labour when the time for harvesting comes. His yam barn was one of the biggest in the village, but surprisingly, most of the yams went to the poor widows In the community.

That was how generous he was. We were a small community and things went well for us. No hassles, no troubles. Until IT came. Bandits. Cruel ones. They'd come to the farm, beat up the owner and steal his/her food. It wasn't too bad until they started coming in droves. Gradually, they graduated from stealing to beating, maiming or in some cases raping the women.. it doesn't matter if you were married. It was as bad as that. It continued for months. We became afraid. Men stopped going to the farm with their wives and children. They stopped going with their bicycles and bikes. They went in twos, threes or more. Infact, we all lived in fear..

then one very painful incident happened. That was what broke the camel's back. It was too much of a bitter pill to swallow. A farmer that went to the farm with his wife, and 3 kids. I don't know if they thought the bandits went on a holiday. Or they felt they could just do their business quickly and go home before word got out that they were in the farm. But whatever their reasons were, things didn't go as planned.

As usual, they went into their farm. First, they ate the food they brought. Drank the palm wine in the farm, then tied the man to a tree, probably to witness what they were going to do to his family for daring to come to the farm. Then, they made an absurd request. They asked the son to choose between raping his Mother or sisters. The Lad looked at them in shock and confusion.

He vehemently refused. They tried cajoling him into doing the unthinkable. But he would have none of that. He wouldn't budge. Then, the object swept across his vision, striking with a sudden sharp pain. Blood splattered everywhere. He stumbled backward, his knees growing weak. The second blow knocked him straight to the ground. Then more blows followed, it cascaded upon him, until he laid there, Limp and lifeless. Beaten to death in cold blood, in his Homeland, in the presence of his parents. And then, they turned to his mother and the sisters. Each and every one of them, 7 in total took turns in violating them. The poor farmer turned his gaze away mourning the fate that befell him on that day. He cried, asking God why he allowed him to see that day. When the bandits where through, they strangled the three women.

Then the debate started, they were at loss if they should kill the man too. Some were of the opinion that they should let him live, the others called for his head. Before they left, He was dealt some heavy blows, left alone to fight for his life, or join his dead family. The choice was his. How he was able to make it to the village to share his story, no one knew. The shock was so much that he couldn't speak for days. Strong men went to his farmland and saw the horrors themselves. They brought back the remains and laid them to mother Earth. Sorrow hung in the air.

It was at this point my people decided to take matters into their hands. This was a wake-up call, and for the very first time, they felt the need to fight their oppressors. It was war they wanted, and they were ready to indulge them. Series of meetings were made. Plans were mapped out. The youths all took up arms, while the women prayed for them. We were asked to stay indoors. And that we did. That day was one of the best days for me. Numerous men came from the neighboring communities to pledge their support, bringing their weapons along. I saw a people bound with one common cause; to bring down the enemy who has so tormented them!

The youths went ahead chanting war songs, while the old men trotted behind, some discussing about the charms they carried along, others walked silently. The clash lasted a few days. Our people came back, victorious. They won! The bandits weren't expecting the attack and our men took advantage of their surprise and rained mayhem on them. The assault was so great that, they fled. Our men pursued them far into the east.

The day they came back was a sight to behold. Women ran out to embrace their men. We sang, danced, ate until we could eat no more. We were happy cos the thing that troubles us, troubled us no more. However, the farm land was abandoned. Even if we knew the bandits were gone, we Just couldn't resume farming. The smell of fear and death still hung on the air.

It's not fiction. Happened life and direct.

Good afternoon Aunty Stella and my dear Bvs.
So the pix of what bv ordered vs what he/she got us quite hilarious 🤣🤣, kpele oo
The bandit story reminded me of my childhood days. I grew up in Jos with my family, but that Early 2000 to 2001 crises changed us, we left Jos for good and I promised never to step my foot.there again, to.the point that I love quite close to Jos now, yet I have never visited there.
I was quite young, the crises made me me see dead bodies littered ,everywhereand we lost 2 of my cousins, they were burnt alive 😥😥 such a sad memory, Jos has never been the same again 😥😥💃
Pls what is it about traffic jam and Mondays in this Abuja, like the traffic jam on Mondays in this city is like 5&6, it's well oo

May their souls rest in peace.

For Pica, I used to eat chalk when I was way younger. I kinda outgrew it.

  26. Good afternoon yard people. This community gist reminds me of Nigeria. Until people (youths) decide to say enough is enough, banditry, kidnapping ,ritual killing, etc will continue unabated!

  35. Hmmmm... @Rhoda. So sad a tale but inspiring albeit. If only Nigerians would follow sway. The women praying for the men, while the men youth and matured as well, troop out and claim back our nation from the hands of the evil men at the helms of affairs. IF ONLY!!

  36. Meaning I had Pica when I was little? I used to love eating chalk, uzu and ice. Oh the smell of sand when the first rain hits is always Heavenly for me. Ignorance sha.
Wow that community story is chilling. Indeed when you're united it's easy to win. If they had not united they'd probably still be cowering in fear.
    Exactly! @ sign out meme.
