DeleteI am an observer of small businesses within my estate - and I agree with my neighbors that my estate is bad place for business.
ReplyDeleteIt is almost like nothing sells there because many shops keep closing as soon as they open.
I have seen barbing salons close, mini supermarkets, tailors, hairdressers, children's shop, shoes and bags stores - even a church.
These people would do decorations and call pastors for the opening - but they will struggle and close in less than a year.
Imagine being in a shop for several months and not selling a single item - I mean, what kind of estate is that?
But there's a woman, who says she's been in the estate for many years and her shop keeps growing and growing. She is not struggling like the other shops.
And I thought about what she might be doing differently.
1. She can greet for Africa.
I think she's very pretentious in her courtesy but it works for her.
2. She's super punctual.
My wife would call her " Ko sere" that is, no play. She's the first to open and last to close . So when the malls that will all like to go have not opened - she's there. When they have closed, she's still there. Sometimes till 11pm!
No matter how proud you are, it will happen one day that you want to buy something and she is the only person that is open.
3. Her shop is super full.
I mean full and overflowing. And that creates what might be a mirage - that she sells everything that you have to buy.
4. She is tenacious
And for her to have stayed over a decade in the estate means she has some tenacity. I mean it is a very quiet area.
So for small business trying to survive, what is your advantage?
