Adventures Of Oko Ashawo The Uber Driver - 54

Texting and driving is one of the most hazardous forms of distracted driving.

Sometime last year, I was on my way to pick up a client in the afternoon when I noticed that the lady driving on the next lane beside me was text-driving. School children were also crossing the road at the junction ahead of us .....

I slowed down but noticed that the lady was engrossed with her phone as she drove. In a flash, a boy of about 9 years ran across the road and this woman hit him with her car. For a moment, I thought I was watching a movie as I saw the boy up in the air before he landed on the bonnet of her car.

The woman quickly dropped her phone, parked her car and ran out to carry the poor boy. I also quickly parked my car to offer her assistance. Immediately, we drove to the nearest Hospital and luckily, the boy was not badly injured.

I learnt my lessons that day and for a long time, I didn’t text and drive until recently when I got distracted. After church service last Sunday, I got a girl’s number. The girl fine die and I promised to keep in touch.

I was driving in the evening, same day I met her when her chats came in. I replied immediately even though I could have delayed my responses since I was driving. I was in traffic as I chatted with her. The chats were getting really interesting and I forgot for a while that I was driving. The next thing I heard was a bang. I had hit the vehicle in front of me.

I came down and checked the damage. The bumper of the other car was scratched and slightly dented while nothing happened to my car. I begged the owner of the car that we should leave the road so as not to cause further obstructions. The guy had just collected his car from the painter the previous day after body work. I also started calculating how much I’d part with for repairs.

Luckily, the guy was really understanding and told me not to worry about fixing his car since his painter will just do some minor adjustments. Chai … see wetin fine girl cause. Abeg, na to focus remain so o.

Accidents happen all the time because of people who drive and chat, some have even lost their lives.......I hope you read this and stop that bad habit...

Hmmmm oko ashawo i wonder how people even do it...I do not use my phone when driving cos i get dizzy but i see people who do it so perfectly that i wonder if there is a school that teaches people how to do this.....Na wah!

    1. This thing is so so bad. It has cost my hubby 50k worth of repairs on another persons car. It’s a very bad habit. I can never do it. My phone is always away when driving. If it’s an emergency, I park and respond. We should try to be more careful

  2. I remember blackberry days, mehnnn people lost their lives driving while chatting, even those chatting while walking on the roads and were mistakenly hit by reckless drivers or dived into gutters.
Listening to music with headphones nko and didn't hear cars horn.

  3. Oko, choose between Christ and "women" (of easy virtues), between church and going to seek them out. Choose.

Did he tell you the woman was an ashawo, he literally met her in church abi one shouldn’t mingle with the other gender because they are Christians?

  4. I don't know of any lady that does not text and drive (apart from SDK as she just said). Once the tweets and text keep beeping on their phones, they are in. You will see them giggling like kids who just collected chocolate. Just imagine what will happen to the car in front if a lady is dumped via text? Hmm... 😜😜😜😜😜

A ha, we are now three; you, I and sdk.😁😁😁😁😁😁 But wait o. Talking on your phone on earpiece is still a load of distraction. In fact, research has it that it is akin to driving under the influence of alcohol, in terms of the distraction. Imagine a girl dumped on phone by her boyfriend, and what happens to a child crossing the road? Or a lady who receives a call from her caregiver that her only child is vomiting? So...? 🙄🙄

  5. I'm very guilty of this. I text and drive especially in traffic. I know it's not a safe practice but sometimes, you just want to do all you can in this crazy Lagos traffic

  7. This post hit home.

Someone close to me was driving us home after work on 3rd MB and was texting his girlfriend while driving. At a point she called and the bros was so distracted. At a point I had to tell him to call her later as he was driving and distracted. Only for him to drop the phone. Next day he started quarrelling with me that as soon as he got home and called the girlfriend, she refused to pick his calls and refused to reply his messages. There and then I knew that something was seriously wrong with him.

There's no big deal in saying, I am driving, I will call or text you later. If that conversation is so important, park at one corner of the road and do not endanger yourself and others for something that will not be so important.

  10. I don’t know how people manage to do that type of deadly multi tasking, I don’t even take calls (even hands free) while I’m driving. I need my 100% focus and attention on the road.

I even wonder how people drive and still text or call. Mostly on a bumpy road. I usually feel dizzy and want to throw up

  15. Even if I'm a passenger in a car, I can't even text because I have motion sickness and also because I want to know more places around. I don't like seeing people text and drive. It annoys the hell out of me
