NCC Instructs Telecom Operators To Block All Sim Cards Not Registered With NIN

The Nigerian Communications Commission NCC on December 15,2020 issued a press release that you need to read to avoid your sim card being blocked...

The following decisions were taken for immediate implementation by all Network Operators:

i.Affirmation of the earlier directive to totally suspend registration of NEW SIMs by all operators.

ii.Operators to require ALL their subscribers to provide valid National Identification Number (NIN) to update SIM registration records.

iii.The submission of NIN by subscribers to take place within two weeks (from today December 16, 2020 and end by 30 December, 2020).

iv.After the deadline, ALL SIMs without NINs are to be blocked from the networks.

v.A Ministerial Task Force comprising the Minister and all the CEOs (among others) as members is to monitor compliance by all networks.

vi.Violations of this directive will be met by stiff sanctions, including the possibility of withdrawals of operating license.

    1. And they are even charging N20 for it. 150 MILLION people x N20 = N3,000,000,000.00 (three billion naira) at least.

  2. What kind of foolish directive is this? As usual, our incompetent government is focusing on the wrong thing at the wrong time. Covid cases are on the rise and they only give two weeks for this? Two weeks for 200 million people to link their phone numbers to their NIN, so that phone operators’ office would be insanely crowded thereby risking an even greater spread of Covid.

Do people in rural areas even know what NIN is? Nonsense.

    2. Are you minding them and on another hand you are talking about a looming 2nd wave..How can you give just 2 weeks and they know how difficult it is to get NIN..This was not well thought out!! They just love thinking of more hardship!!! Tell me all the biometrics/BVN that we have done what has it benefitted us..Nothing!!

  3. While i totally get what Ncc and FG is trying to do, the timing couldnt be worse. Just as the country is seeing dramatic rise in covid infections, network operators now have to encourage over 100m to gather. The taste of this directive is foul IMO.

I hope common sense prevails, fast.

  7. I hope our network providers won't ask us to go to their various centres alone to do that, they should provide several other means of doing it.

    1. That was how i got my own NIN. I didn't have to go queue up at their office to register for NIN. I hear the linking of our phone number was done during the voter's registration and with *346#, it generated my NIN.

  10. Please if I do not register my SIM with NIN can I still get my money when I go to the bank or at the atm? That two weeks seem unrealistic

  11. Another IDIOTIC directive that's not about to reduce pump price, check corruption or defeat Boko Haram. That's all they ever seem to be good at. It's not like it's even easy to get the USELESS NIN! After all the stress I went through in 2003 for the Number, they still couldn't issue me any las, las. Are they telling us that BVN, Driver's License, International Passport number and all other means of identification are all inconsequential? If they have nothing meaningful to come up with other than looking for more means to tie Nigeria up in knots, then meh dem swerve, abeg! Ppl have more cogent issues to focus their minds on.
