Couch Convo - Homeschooling And The Role Of Parents.

Have you identified the problem areas and how you can make it easier?

Do you and your spouse (if any)share the times you spend schooling the kids or does it fall on one person alone?

If you are a parent homeschooling your kids, can you share tips on how its easy for you?

If you are a parent homeschooling your kids and having problems, can you shares these problems so that someone might /can give advice?

If you are a parent and you are still non existent in your child's life (especially in this Covid 19 times),you are permanently useless......#Noapologies

    2. LOL 14:29..i get what Anon 13:05 is getting at. Homeschooling isn't exactly popular in Nigeria, I bet anon hasn't met any person that has homeschooled their ward before hence the question.

    3. Anonymous 14:39, what are you feeling like insulting Anonymous 23:05. What's wrong with what he or she had said. Why not cool down before rushing to glue on someone's comment.
I don't know how it works in Nigeria but homeschooling works well for me atm, was stressful during the initial lockdown. Working from home and helping my children out with school work wasn't easy 🤷🏾‍♀️ but now we take it as it goes, step by step.

    1. He is acting his age.He can't do more than his capacity can carry@just 2years.Just continue with what you are doing, play him educational videos, they learn faster when it's more fun.Dont put pressure on him and on yourself. They learn with age.

    2. Invest in educational curriculums. ABC mouse, Homer, Khan Academy kids, download them from playstore. Some of them require a subscription and some are free. You'll be thankful you did. If you are a tiger mum, don't pressure your child but restrict them to only educational cartoons and nursery rhymes. Some teachers now do YouTube videos to teach kids, find those too. There are many of them on YouTube. You don't even have to sit to teach him anything. When my son was 2, he couldn't even recite 1 to 30 and another parent told me their own child can recite 1 to 200. Ofcourse, I was intimidated but I quickly realized every child is different and took the pressure off myself. Now my child who has not even started school can read like a primary three student, started doing basic addition at 3 and can recognize difficult words by syllabic pronunciation. I plan to enroll him in kindergarten because that's the class allowed according to his age. The teacher was so impressed by his reading skills, she was asking me how I did it. You got this, mama

    3. He is only 2 years old and like Anonymous 13:34 said he's only acting his age. Don't put pressure on him, play nursery rhymes that show alphabets and numbers and ul be surprised how he will be able to identify numbers and alphabet and use words.
When my children were growing, I couldn't afford to take them to nursery or a registered child minder but thank God for Cbeebies. You would think my children attended independent schools or attended nursery. They are doing very well at the moment, both graduated with First Class to Gods glory.

  5. Last year I felt it was not necessary to home school my 2yr old. Until we change location and wanted to register her in a missionary school. Lo and behold my daughter who could talk very well didn't pass the interview. I was shocked cos I felt she was still little. She was not accepted but it pushed me to start home schooling her and to tell you I was shocked at how fast she is learning. Sometime she frustrates me making me to beat her and later on I feel so bad making me look for other means to make her Learn. I teach her when I come back from work, I even went as far as buying a board to write down alphabets and numbers as she keep tearing the paper ones I bought. I'm so proud of how far she has come. At work I prepare her lessons as soon as I'm back we enter home schooling. That interview open my eyes although I feel bad that the school rejected my 3yr old child but it made me buckle up. Now she comes to me begging to write and recite her alphabets and numbers. I'm a single mum, I do it all myself and I'm proud of the effect. E no easy but with God everything is possible.

    1. Nigeria is a failed country, rejecting a child into school. Na wah. Why are they teachers? Is it for making money or helping and encouraging children to be better?

  7. You can get number cards and alphabet cards for him and whenever you pronounced the alphabet, simply show him so with time he will grab it. Please don't rush him, it is a gradual process. You are doing a great job mum and I am proud of you and kisses to your genius cos I am proud of him.
Get videos for him on alphabet and numbers, it will help him.
    God will help us mothers

  8. Some of these schools too do.What do they even want such a little child to know?what then is the essence of school if I may ask? They want a child to learn straight from the womb? Madam,I think you probably wanted her to start with a higher class.Outright rejection is rare for a 3year old. They would usually just place the child a class lower than what you had expected if they didn't do well for the intended class.Try and enrol her in another school and allow them place her in a class they deem fit.

    1. I did not ooo, I even beg she should be taken back to kg 1 they refused that she will drag them back. Which higher class would I want to put a 3yr old in if not nursery class. She started crech at 4 month and has been going to school if not for covid. Although it was middle of the term. It was a disappointment but blessing in disguise.

    2. Anon...14.56...taken back to kg 1 you say, what class did she interview to be placed in? A child who is 3 years...should be in kg 1 at most.

Your child ain't slow, the school as an unusually high expectation for a kid that is meant to be starting school the first time.

  9. We are already experiencing virtual learning since we are in a pandemic which is still like homeschooling but synchronous.

You can get a curriculum for after zoom learning that you can study with your child. Make sure to include play time cos it's difficult for kids to focus for an extended period of time.

Some kids love the stimulation of being around their teacher and peers and just prefer the school environment than home so sometimes, allow your kids have group lessons with their friends.

  10. Psst..we have homeschooling in Nigeria, it's called help our children with homework and introduce stuff to them stylishly and gradually. For serious homeschooling like typical school, my people; this government will humble you so we fall back on homework. Another thing is the change in syllabus and teaching methods; when this children decide to show you nine-nine, you wonder how our parents coped with us while growing up.
At least, more respect and understanding will be given to TEACHERS.

  11. For the child having difficulty in identifying alphabets and numbers 1 to 10, you can write them in different shades of colours.

  12. I homeschool and I belong to a wonderful homeschooling platform. Homeschooling is not easy. Its just something I am passionate about. There are different homeschooling methods such as the likes of classical, eclectic etc.
One of the problems I have encountered is having to pause our circle time( classes) because of a new baby. But we do other forms of learning.
The milestones I set for my kid is not about how fast he can recite numbers or letters, it's way deeper than that. I use a play and learn method for my toddler.

  13. My friend tried homeschooling her son herself but she had to stop when she found out he always becomes scared once she tells him bring your book.
She just doesn't have that patience of teaching a child over and over again till he understands so she ends up beating the child before the lesson is over,
she had to pay a private tutor to teach the child

  14. My homeschooling experience nd why i stopped.

I started nd stopped because of funds, my kid is 11 nd in js2. I employed teachers to teach the most important subject given that.. i dont even know what i used my js education for. Covid made it more meaninful as the teachers are kind and very patient, esp maths teacher. But i stopped because its more expensive paying monthly than traditional sch per term. But i love the home schooling, makes me know my kid more and where there are issues to work on. If i have cash, ill go back to the homeschooling with paid teachers. When its time for junior waec,we register in a sch nd withdraw afterwards. Na just 1 i born,nd im a single parent. I really wish i could do more sha.

  15. I've never been a fan of homeschooling and/or home lessons. Kids deserve a complete learning experience among their peers, seniors and juniors.
With regards home lessons, I ddont think I'll actually do that for my kids except I notice he/she/they really need it and even then, it wouldn't be at home. It would be in school environment with well seasoned teachers.
Home is for rest, fun and games.
