Couch Convo - Paying For Light In Nigeria.

This post is for those who live in Nigeria and how they deal with their 'NEPA' bills..

I am assuming you all use the old system of paying NEPA bills right? Or is it the prepaid type where you know how much you have and can manage your light?

How does one deal with receiving bills of outrageous sums? If you have your pre paid meter, do you still receive bills?

When I was in Nigeria, NEPA almost always cut our light but we almost always had light via the 'back door'...LOL

what is the highest bill you have received and how did you sort it out? or do you have your generator permanently on?

Naija na wah!

    1. Four of us share a meter in my house and all our big appliances are on direct esp ACs and freezers. It is well done and they have been there but can't find anything. We recharge 10k per month and that's it.

    2. What does ‘on direct’ mean, please?

  3. Funny situation recently I had. Road was being expanded in my area and the poles had to be brought down. We were without power for months.

Yet nepa was still bringing bills and are insisting I pay.

    2. @ DodAlmighty it's very easy. Just write to them since it's not only you,but the whole area and take to their office. If possible snap the pictures of the road construction and the poles down. Last last they would cancel the bills. It happened to me,but mine was transformer issue.

  5. Stella, the bills are outrageous. The only consolation is there's constant power supply. The prepaid meter is even worse, with it, you dare not use electric cooker and the fridge must be turned off after some time.

  6. Hmmmmm, the outrageous bill these people give can give someone heart attack. I stay in just a room self contained and these people will be giving me extimated bill of 15k. Last month's own was 18k,I've to go to their office to make complain that'll not yield to anything.

  7. The NEPA situation is very annoying. Imagine increasing the tariff by 125%
I live in a serviced apartment, and up until January, our monthly service charge was 25k. Because of the Tariff increase, it was increased to 30k in February with the condition that we will still have to be cutting off electricity for 5hours per day(we basically have 24hrs electricity). Once it’s 7am, our estate electricity is cut off, and is turned back on from 10am-5pm. It’s turned off again at 5pm-7pm. We thought we had found an easy solution, only for us to be informed on Wednesday that even the cut off hours is still not helping, and we have run out of funds for the rest of the month. Service Charge has sha been increased again effective April to 38k. It’s not the most comfortable situation, but I know God will continue to provide.

    1. There's a way it is usually stepped down. Ask the PHED officials or your neighbours. Your consumption will reduce by half.

  9. With this tariff increase, I pay 40- 50k a month for nepa now in a 3 bedroom flat. I use prepaid. May God help us.

    1. Same as mine. N10,000 last for just three weeks, unlike before that it could last me for six weeks.

  11. Someone I know did something I dont like. He connected his line straight to the feed. He manipulated his meter, nothing really flows through his meter. It's a very big house with high fence and gate. Nepa officials cant come in to check. Ppm is written boldly outside,he pay any amount he likes every month just to keep the receipts but that's nothing near the amount he uses daily. Sad. On the other hand Nepa deserves no mercy.

      Go and report him na.

    2. He should do it with sense. It reads on their system when a house is using electricity but not recharging its prepaid meter. He can connect only fan and bulbs to the meter so as to ensure he pays something once in a while. If not, when they'll come for him, he'll pay through his nose.

This country is a mess.i was using the billing method but the bill kept increasing every month. The last one they brought was 22k,from 3k o,and just me in a 2bedroom flat.I couldn't take it so I got the prepaid meter,ha! The thing dey fly like bird.initially 1k will give u 36units so in a month I can manage 4-5k for light but now 1k will only give u 16units,so u need up spending 10k every month and u are still managing o,cos I only on my fridge at night and light bulbs at night too.ive packed up my deep fry, micro micrand electric stove.Infact Stella this country hates poor people.imagine a mudu of garri is 500hundred now.Garri that used to be poor man food o.abeg madam steSte wen u go enter naija so I fit follow u go do house girl for u there.i don tire for this country.

  13. Estimated billing is worse, even if there's no light for 2 weeks, they will still bring bill over over 25k.

  14. Prepaid sure pass.

    1. Definitely. We basically ration the usage of the air-conditioning units. If it's shower hour/ dinner time between 6:30pm and 8pm, all units are switched off because no one stays in their rooms. It's turned on when about to sleep and room will still be chilling then at 2am it all goes off.
The sumo pumps water for exactly 50mins for 3 tanks, there's an alarm for it now so no spillage.
Then no cooking of beans, moimoi or ukwa and the likes on electric cooker. Charcoal stove ti take over. The breeze does the job by the window.

Many cuts jare because our bill is heavy and the light is under special arrangement.
All residents cooperate wella. So we're good.

  16. We recharge #10,000 monthly and it doesn't even last.I have to ration boiling of water and Ac.Thank God for the cool weather. Nepa doesn't come to my building because they know we all use prepaid.

But I have a neighbour who did bypass.
I just hope one day wont be one day.

  17. When I was on estimated bill of 10k, I complained and paid to have the prepaid meter. Initially, all was well till the increase. I remember a month I bought 30k worth of electricity, I cry. Now we hardly switch on appliances in the house yet the thing still dey run. I tire oo. I've complained to nepa, but it's apparently the same everywhere. I use solar too but not much of a difference.
Basically, I spend more on electricity and fuel than anything.

    1. Remove the fuse when you are not using nepa and it will stop running

    2. @Alexander he needs the constant public power supply to charge his solar batteries. So removing the fuse is counter-productive.

  18. Stella for us we are now using pre-paid meter so we aint getting the outrageous bills anymore...However my neighbours were charged 43,000NGN for 3-Bedroom flat..I learnt that these NEPA Officials go to everyone's transformer and they use some instruments that reads the power supplied and go back back calculate it and distribute the outrageous price to customers whether in face me I slap you, duplex, 2 bedroom, 3 bedroom, miniflat and co...

  19. When I was on estimated billing, I was paying 35k monthly for our duplex. I used to feel so angry and couldn't wait to get the prepaid meter. My hubby warned that we would pay more but I ignored him. We got a prepaid meter then got upgraded to premium in our estate so we pay #65 per unit, now I pay 65k monthly despite the fact that I change to solar from 7am to 7pm daily. It's so annoying and frustrating because if we don't change over, we spend about 135k...no one can use AC again sef. In fact, I had to disconnect my children 's AC from that electrical box (whatever it's called)
I'm just tired of the money spent monthly. A friend of mine did stuff(illegal ) and use 15k monthly but I can never do such because I believe it is stealing. Anyway, my daughters are beginning to leave the house one by one, hopefully I should get some respite.

  21. The prepaid meter isn't helping matters... The way it reads is crazy... We don't even use any appliances anymore just a small fridge, bulbs and fans yet the units just keeps flying despite all. It's just discouraging. Spending 12k monthly on prepaid for an average family like mine is overwhelming. It is well sha

  22. Stella the bill is outrageous, but we take consolation in the fact that we have steady power.

Last month they came for disconnection, reached my house, i showed them my receipt, i pay on time, only for these jokers to ask me to pay extra 10k on top the already outrageous sum i was already paying, i was livid!

I and mil insulted the crap out of them, we called them all sorts of names🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, they threatened to cut us off in 5 days if we don't remit the cash, we dared them to try it.

I didn't pay nada and they didn't cut me off! They came this month, i payed the usual, they looked at my receipt and left without a word. Ndi ara

  23. So l have a question for us Nigerians. If there was 24h electricity rate were reasonable, would yoi pay your bills or still find a way around the system?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Truth be told, the system is a mess. If you are a civil servant collecting like 105k and your PHCN bill is 30k for 2bedroom and then fuel is 30k monthly, how does one survive? The meagre salaries and poor standard of living are sooo bad.

I live in a 3bedroom and bought 45k last month, walai i was livid but what can u do? The heat in abuja in January and February was unbearable so one had to be rationing the number of ACs on and the number of hours, it's crazy the tarrif rate but sadly one can't do without light or fuel like dstv because my dstv now doesn't get subscription unless the kids are holiday. It's sad the tarrif rate.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's actually frustrating...I'm just so tired of it all.
