Saturday In House Gists - Prepaid Versus Post Paid Meters In Nigeria

In Nigeria if you are not using the prepaid or post paid meter then its possible you are 'tapping' free light or living in darkness!

Do you use prepaid Meter or post paid meter?

I was listening to Comedian Okey Bakassi on Instagram live radio On Friday and he was complaining about his prepaid meter not being active one week after it was installed. he was really pissed and one could tell he was not a fan of prepaid meter.

Do you prefer the prepaid or the post paid meter? what problems do both pose? How much do you recharge a month with the prepaid ad how much bill gets to you with the post paid?

I heard/read some days back that people can share the prepaid meter.... How convenient is this for you?

Please explain the prepaid and post paid so that i ca understand better....

Lets gist!!!

  3. I prefer prepaid to postpaid. I've used both and I can say pre paid is better for me. In my a room self contained apartment, when I was using post paid, the were bringing estimated bill of 18k, even we don't have light for weeks. They'll still bring the estimated bill until my land lady got the pre paid for me, now I do use 3k or less per month.

    1. Same here, use electric cooker to cook whenever there is light, infact light motivates me to cook expecially beans

But some idiots decided to vandalize transformer, last time it happened like that they charged us 19k plus for not using light for almost 4months👺

  5. This new prepaid meter they are distributing now, I don't understand. For over one week now,we have been trying to recharge it after the free KW finished. Both the code, the token and the recharge pin is not working. We have gone to their office severally, follow their instructions but no where.

    1. It's not free KW,its worth #7000 and after that you should recharge at least #10000 so they can collect their #7000 and further give you #3000 unit..

Except that #7000 is paid, you cant recharge when exhausted..

Also after that first unit exhausts;there is a process called marrying/kissing your meter;its some code and those Nepa officials can come do it for you for not more than #3000;then their transport fare..

Dont allow them cheat you. This is fact

    2. @martins please what exactly is marrying / kissing your meter? Explain please oo. This post is important to me. I haven't decided whether to migrate from post paid to prepaid. We have constant power supply here so I want to know which is best (we get plenty appliances o)

    3. @Anon 15:38,its a code(5258 plus other digits) which you press on the box for recharging the token;but NEPA officials know it and would hide from you when doing it for you that first time..

Now if your unit is finished but there is power supply, you plug the box directly to your wall socket(in your flat or room) which has to be close enough to the meter outside then dial that code(Marrying is done only once, after that you can recharge your line on your own)

If you also have a battery, you can use the battery on that box(there is space for all model) or you go to your neighbour(even if it's not your own compound) but is also within same range as the prepaid meter machine in your compound..

For our own compound;I just called an electrician that added one electric extension for us for #1000 and its from the prepaid meter;so we just plug the machine there and recharge for all tenants anytime you are out of power instead of going to knock for another fellow tenant..

It's more like a wifi or bluetooth connection(in my own words) hence why everything concerning subscriptions should be in close range else you keep pressing your recharge pin and it wont enter..

      Hope this helps..

  6. None of them are good. The way the units in the prepaid fly,you would think others are using it with you if you didn't know better,it's a blood sucker, however,if there's no light, the units dont read.As for post paid AKA estimated bill, whether there is light or not,you can be sure of getting an outrageous bill at the end of the month. In fact they bill you according to the area you live in and the type of building.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Nepa officials hate our building because all flats have each prepaid meter.Although quite expensive, still better than monthly estimated bill.

Some also have their ways of bypassing.🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️

    1. Prepaid meter is far better than estimated billing. If there's no light, it's not reading. Nepa looses if they don't give prepaid meter users light.

  8. Prepaid is pay as you go. Is like buying data or mtn recharge card. It's more convenient. You buy and use according to your pocket. When l was using postpaid metre. They normally bring estimated bill which varies from month to month. Any day you talk to them rudely, they will increase your bill that month, If you forgot to pay or do not have money to pay on time. Two days after the end of the month, they will disconnect your light. You have to go and beg them to come and reconnect you with a reconnection fee. Oh. I hate postpaid. They bill you according to their own discretion of your pocket. I personally prefer prepaid. No quarrel. No stress. I paid more while using postpaid and l'm paying less with prepaid

  9. Nice topic, pls someone help...they just installed the prepaid metre, we used it up,the units and it finished, we have paid for new units including the old one...still we don't have light, we called NEPA...they can't fix it, they said we shd not have allowed it to finish, what can I do?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They can fix it;its business for them and they are expecting you to name your price for them..

Check above;i replied a BV about same issue..

Also after this first recharge;you will be doing it on your own..

Its business for the "NEPA" officials because they know it's a one-off payment thing..

      @MARTINS

    2. They are right, then can’t fix it, that recharge box, the small one you load your card needs light to be used, you can put batteries and try it, or plug it to an extension and bring it close to the meter for signal, that’s if a close neighbor has light. It ll work

  10. I use prepaid meter I can’t shout. I live in the UK and if they bring bill for you lasan you will want to faint. Both my gas and electricity are prepaid and I have peace. Summer I don’t use gas so I don’t top it up but if na postpaid they will keep sending bill mad o!

  11. Pre-paid meter for me. Ever since I got mine, it's been peace andconveniencec. No more estimated bills and my line being disconnected in error and having to payreconnection feesd. I had issues loading my card for some time this year but its much better now. I choose prepaid meter anytime anyday.

  12. I have used both and I can say pre paid is far more better, just monitor what you use! But these days, the way the units runs,I'm scared! 5k covers for a month before but now I spend close to 10k monthly due to how the unit flies now!

Post paid is good, you can use all your appliances but the outrageous bills will leave you cursing and insulting them when they distribute the bill! Yet the light is not constant..even when there's no light for weeks or months, bills won't stop coming in

    ReplyDelete
  13. I use pre paid and I have been using same for over 5th years now. And actually prefer it.
My meter is actually a very old model, CONLOG to be precise and does not run like these newer models does.
During the lock down, I was away from home, and my units were a little less than what it was when I left home because my flat supplies the stairs light, if it were post paid, I for they pay bills even as I no dey house.
I have a friend who lives in Ikorodu in Lagos, don't know the exact area, their power na low current since I knew him last year, na postpaid, they still pay bills. Me, was shocked

  14. I use prepaid at home and postpaid for shop. Prepaid is better.

  15. The only issue with prepared is you can't use some appliances anyhow..Ac dey suck unit like vampire

    ReplyDelete
  16. I use postpaid, the bill ranges from 12-18k but I pay 3500 per month only.My light is 24/7 with few hours off day once a week.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I have used both. Prepaid is too expensive.
For 2 bedroom flat, one deep freezer, one refrigerator, two AC, person dey recharge every week, a month one spends 40k on electricity recharge. Naija is a huge joke, scam ati scum!
Whereas in my parents house, a 6 bedroom duplex with two deep freezers, one refrigerator 2 AC (one in living room and one in masters bedroom) the phone bill per month is not more than 15k
So tell me which one do you prefer?
Even my mom said she was asking the phcn guy to give them prepaid meter, the guy said mama this one you have is better oh. I told my mom not to ever ask for prepaid meter again o. I mean even if the light in my city is more constant, the one in my family house is still ok, they share it withing the hours of the days. Altleast there is 10hrs of electricity everyday.

  18. Washing machine in both houses, I prefer postpaid.
If prepaid do you strong thing you go know
My experience with both so far, I prefer post paid....if I'm traveling I will alert them so they know light won't be used

  19. Post paid = estimated billing system.
Expect shocking bills, with or without power supply, a small conversation in a keke recently reveals that the electricity distribution coys give their staff monthly target remittance, with threats of sack if the target is not met, so if you're still on post-paid and cannot switch immediately to prepaid, go to their office once once to rant small, or make friends with oga or madam in charge of your area you'll see changes lol.

Again people make the mistake of totally clearing the monthly bill, if its a rented apartment, pay a token of the total, their focus is pay something monthly, if you have the habit of clearing it all... Your bill will keep increasing.

Pre-paid =Aka pay as you go, just like gsm, its one of the best things I've seen working in naija. The pros are numerous, if you happen to have low current, the meter does not count, when you run out of units *555* not sure if its same for all meters /states though. If you have a good fridge, run it throughout the night, switch off by morning. Replace your bulbs to Led bulbs, they consume less. Start reading the manuals of electronics and go for those with low voltage. Wall sockets must be put off, that idle charging point is not your friend oh lol. In fact when leaving the house put off all appliances. If you run AC, increase your units purchase, and if you're thinking of by passing, make sure you have emergency 300k because they can check it from their office, they conduct routine checks. Armed men entered our compound one day with NEPA officials ..... They traced from their office to 3 houses in the neighborhood, ours inclusive! Well landlady was the culprit, the husband who's always away had to "settle" with 300k. Country hard but some things no worth the stress.

  20. In my state, areas that they use post paid dont see light yet they pay outragious bills. Prepaid iscthe best. Just learn self discilpine and you are good to go. 3k can take me 2 months. I dont have ac. So i put off the lights i am not using, and the fride when i go to work. We always have light. The peace of mind that comes with prepaid is out of this world.

    1. You are so right, the peace of mind using prepaid is so apt

    2. True, I use 3k for more than one month in my three bedroom flat. I use inverter freezer, low energy bulbs and my washing machine doesn't consume much. I prefer prepaid

  21. I use prepaid, not funny esp as I pump water and even have my neighbors light for a price. A month is roughly 30k but for some months now, we have barely 4 hours of light daily, so I no too loose.
