The Adventures Of Oko Ashawo The Uber Driver - 76

Oh The Tables turned!!!

I still remember vividly a recent episode I wrote about a woman who got involved in an accident with a trailer when she tried to block him for scratching her bumper. In this life, one should not be too quick to judge because the tables can turn and you could find yourself in a similar circumstance where you act in the exact way that you condemned earlier.

I had just done bodywork on my car and picked it up from the painter last Saturday. My first job on Monday was to pick up a client from the mainland to Abeokuta by 7am. Because of the peculiar traffic situation in Lagos, I left my house very early and drove to the client’s pickup location. I got to his neighbourhood by 6am,and stayed in my car to rest a bit while I waited.

A few minutes after I had parked my car, I heard a loud bang and my car jolted forward. One Uber driver had rammed his car into mine from the back as he was rushing to pick up his passenger in the early morning rush.

I ran out of my car to inspect the damage and I saw my bumper dented with one of the rear lights cracked. I didn’t know when tears dropped from my eyes. The driver started begging profusely and said he didn’t have any money on him as he had just finished paying his weekly rental to the owner of the car. I told him there was no way I could let him go because the damage on my car was much and he needed to bring part of the money for the fixing.

After haggling back and forth, this guy insisted he had no money on him and wasn’t going to take responsibility that after all, his car is full of scratches and dents done by other drivers and he never for once demanded that they fixed his car. He told me to take his phone number and call him by 9am when his panel beater will be available to fix my car. He refused dropping his spare tyre saying I should trust him to call me. How?

I knew I was heading nowhere with this guy and a thought came to my mind. Since he wasn’t willing to take responsibility, I was also going to destroy his car. I went straight to my booth, picked up my wheel spanner and decided to break his rear lights and side mirror, then drive away because I was running out of time.

As I walked towards his car, I didn’t have the heart to do that. I just drove off and left him for God to judge and deal with him. When I got to my passenger, I explained things to him. He was kind enough to dash me 10k extra to take care of the car when we got to Abeokuta. At the end of the day, I was glad I didn’t go that route of destroying that guy’s car. Who knows?

We might have ended up in the hospital or police station.

  1. I look forward to this column, not just because of the interesting stories of Oko Ashawo but Stella's comments. The thing dey always sweet me. Stella really knows how to handle him 😛😛😛😛😛

On the contrary, it can be really painful when you just fixed your car and it's damaged in a few days by a careless driver. Anyway, I would have shown that useless driver shege if I were in your shoes. I don't like what I hate 😏
