Former Police Officer Derek Chauvin Jailed For 22.5 Years Over Murder Of George Floyd...

Former police officer Derek Chauvin, has been sentenced to 22 and half years in prison (270 months) for the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old man who died on May 25, 2020, as Chauvin used his knee to cut out Floyds air supply....

Hennepin Court Judge, Peter Cahill, in his ruling on Friday, said, “the sentence is not based on emotion or sympathy, but i want to acknowledge the pain both families are feeling, especially George Floyd’s.”

“I am not basing my sentencing on any public opinion, the job of the trial court is to apply the law,” the said.

Minnesota Assistant Attorney General Matthew Frank had asked for a sentence of 360 months (30 years) for Chauvin.

Chauvin who was seen in the viral video with his knee on Floyd’s neck, was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

However, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison later announced that the charges against Chauvin had been upgraded to second-degree murder and that new charges have been filed against the other three officers involved.

  1. Derek, an American cop killed a man and in less than a year if I'm correct, have been judged and convicted of murder.

James Nwafor, former OC Akwuzu SARs killed so many and still walking freely. He was aided by the government to escaped prosecution.

Do you see why in Nigeria it will be so difficult to fight or tackle police brutality. Bad enough, the media isn't doing enough to draw global attention of the crimes committed by OC James Nwafor and his likes. Does it mean we have all forgotten or move over it?

    1. TEEJAY, This case was expediated. There are so many people here who have been in Jail since 2019 and still getting one continuance after the other. The courts are all backlogged here. Covid made it worse.

    2. 22.5 years but only 15 years is mandatory. He is eligible to be released and placed under supervised release for the remaining 7 years on good behaviour. He should have gotten 2 life terms plus 300 years.

  2. Just listening to his mother's character witness statement, you will understand where he got his lack of empathy from. I'm glad his life is over

    1. Don't mind the mum. Like mother like son. What was Derek insinuating with his last statement during his 'apology appeal'?

    2. Only 22 years? What happened to life imprisonment? That guy is a cold hearted murderer. I was traumatised watching the video. Still scared of moving my family to the US because of him and his likes

    3. Generally, Caucasians do not have empathy, it's called psychopathy.

    4. 19.20 that's so not true. Look at their societies, the way they care for the disabled, protect the weak, etc. They show far more empathy from their actions than we do. It's in African societies we still have issues like jungle justice, accusing children of witchcraft etc that stem from a deadening of empathy.

    5. Anon 19:46, I can tell that you don't live in the white man's land. That is why people who haven't lived with whites are shocked at the approximately 1000 bodies of children buried in unmarked graves in residential schools in Canada. And the investigation only just begun. When those who know talk, just keep quiet and learn to protect yourself.

    6. 20.55 hold it there. I've lived in the UK for over a decade. The instances you are giving are rare occurrences, and definitely not sufficient to generalize that caucasians lack empathy. Go to your home country and see people being lynched on a weekly basis, then come back to talk about empathy. Next time, be smart enough not to ignorantly generalise especially when the facts speak for themselves.

    7. You probably don't know the meaning of empathy or what it translates to in a practical manner. A society that prioritises and supports the less able is the one you are referring to as having no empathy? What a joke.

    8. Pls o, which ppl were killing twins, which ppl were shaving the head of widows and making them drink the water from the corpse, which people carry tyres and burn petty thieves to death. Those are the ones that do not have empathy!!

    9. @10.27, thank you for pointing that out! The average white American do NOT have empathy! Their soul is dark, bitter and wicked especially to blacks. I live & work with them so I KNOW what I am saying. Reason I don't believe in their religion and preaching of love.Sad miserable people who wants others to be unhappy like them! But they want people to be nice, helpful and kind to them! What an irony! If not for our useless leaders and poverty in Nigeria,Nigeria is a good place to live,we have kindness for each other.

  4. They should have giving him life sentence...it's a clear case of murder.

If he was black, it definitely won't be 22years.

  6. I couldn’t bear to watch the whole video of George Floyd being tortured and executed. Chauvin looked so scarily demonic…like he was enjoying himself. I like that the judge said part of the reasoning for giving this sentence was because of the cruelty shown to Floyd. It’s not over, Chauvin still has to stand before God.
