US Border Agent Seizes 15 Large Snails From Nigerian Woman's Luggage.

A passenger arriving from Nigeria initially disclosed the dried beef in her suitcase, before adding 15 giant African land snails to her declaration.

The snails, which were handed over to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), can cause meningitis in humans.

They are illegal to own in the US without a permit.

Giant African land snails are among the most damaging snails in the world.
They are native to West Africa, where they are considered a delicacy but they're also known to carry a parasite with a rather menacing name: rat lungworm. This parasite can cause meningitis, an inflammatory illness that affects the brain and spinal cord.

More than 2,800 cases of the disease have been reported across 30 countries, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In most cases, infected people have mild symptoms, like headaches, a stiff neck, and nausea - or no symptoms at all.

  7. Snails ravaged several parts of Florida a few years ago. Huge giant African snails. The type you buy along the road to Lagos, from Benin. These guys should have just called Nigerians in Florida, to come get the snails but they choose to pay people to remove them. I so badly wanted to go to Florida then oh. I couldn’t get time off work. I would have taken the snails for free. I would have ate snail stew, snail soup, snail everything for a whole year.
But, on a more serious note, why did the lady take live snails in?? We need to be careful before they even ban us from bringing fried or dried snails.

  8. Lol. They seized the snail cos somewhere in Florida the snail population couldn't be controlled due to a tourist/immigrant or citizen brought it from his/her home country to breed. After then the USA started banning snails

    2. Please be enlightened people, if they say snails may carry parasites that can lead to meningitis then it must be true because if they didn't carry out a research, they will not say such! Don't be quick to think that oyibos are condemning you or your culture. The takeaway from this is that anyone eating snails must make sure it is properly cleaned and cooked through to avoid risk of infection. I'm certain a lot of people may have gotten meningitis from snail and died in Africa/Nigeria but since doctors will likely not even detect the cause of illness (no offense doctors) and hardly any autopsies to determine cause of death...

  15. Snail is an intermediate host of some parasites like flukes and roundworms. These parasites
    cause diseases in human beings.🐌

Pigs is also intermediate host of influenza viruses and tapeworm which cause diseases in mankind yet whites and Asians eat pork, bacon etc. 🐷

Jews do not eat these unclean animals as God commanded through Moses.

  16. The woman shouldn't have carried live snails to the US since they are contraband products.

However, it should be notes that; there are different types of Giant African Land snails.
    The Achatina fulica (AF)
    The Achatina achatina (AA) and
    The Archachatina marginata (AM)

Amongst these 3 species; the Achatina fulica (AF) also called the garden snail are very voracious and pose as a big threat to our green gardens.

Howbeit, it should be noted that AM and AA can be kept as pet because they are less voracious.

Finally, Water snails serves as intermediate host to lungworm and NOT our precious Giant Land snails while snails breed under an hygienic natural environment are safe for consumption.
