    1. I was invited to one. I went and was ushered to the front. Hmmm. Next thing, pastor started talking about men of valour and how money was needed. After service, I left and never attended the church again. Pastor did not know na package I dey do. He thought I was rich.

    2. Nope. Never experienced any. Our own Catholic ushers (church wardens) their own na to bring out basket or offering box and make money sha plenty inside. Any other thing no concern them. Lol.

    1. Not to sound like a church usher but I don't think chewing gum while in church service/Mass is actually a good thing. There are some characters you don't exhibit in certain gatherings and you must respect that.
I don't think you need to be told, you must have to respect every environment and gathering you find yourself.

For myself, they won't embarrass me cos they won't even see me. I don't go to church, that saves me every embarrassment they might have for me...lol

    2. There are a lot of reasons people chew gum. As long as I am not chewing it loudly, there's no rule book that says one should not chew gum

      Delete
    3. Aka, no! Your action was wrong. It's called courtesy. You don't chew gum in church, just like you don't chew gum in meetings.
By the way I'm not the 1st anon.

    4. Would you chew gum in a business meeting?
If your boss told politely to take out the gun would you roll ur eyes at him or her?

      That’s so wrong.
Chewing gum is wrong to start with. It’s distracting and you can loose guard and chew it loudly or pop it.
Then going ahead to roll your eyes js all shades of rude
      Please do better

  4. During my Service year in ilorin, I attended Winners all through and I honestly enjoyed it. One day I went to church early, front row seats were vacant so I decided to sit there thinking it was the same with my Catholic Church were anyone can sit anywhere, only for one male usher to rudely tell me to get up as females were not allowed to sit in the front rows. Ehennnnnnn? You say wetin??? I challenged him o, we were almost raising our voices in Church, i picked my bag and left. On my way out another usher rushed and started pleading that i should not go, he said infact i can sit in front if i so wished, some mamas also joined and were pleading, they explained that the reason they made that law/rule was because of how some ladies dressed to church and the pastor can be tempted but since I was decently dressed, I could sit in front. Anyway, I just sat behind because of the mamas. I enjoyed Winners that year sha.

    3. My church had to stop females from sitting in front cos of indecent dressing. But if you are decently dressed, they can allow you.

    4. That usher lacks manner, he could have passed the info nicely without you being embarrassed or feeling somehow.

  5. Not personally but my pastor shared his experience with us. He travelled to Nigeria to minister and whenever he's in Nigeria, he wears shorts and flipflop. So the host pastor came to pick him at 6 am and he declined that a driver should be sent to pick him later. So when he got to church the usher just looked at his dressed down state and directed him to the back. He said he was even trying to explain to the usher that he's to preach but the usher wasn't having it. The host pastor had to preach and at the end when he saw him and introduced him, the same usher started prostrating. I think its more hypocritical on the part of the usher than embarrassing.

    1. This reminded me of the passage from James 2 about prejudice and favouritism.

"My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?

2 For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. 3 If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, 4 doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?"

      Delete
    2. What will it take him to dress accordingly. Dressing how you want to be addressed comes into play here.
Truth be told, if you see anyone dressed like a mad man on the road wouldn't you address him as such. And why is it that he only does that when he comes to Nigeria?
The Only hypocrite I see here is your so called pastor who shot himself on the leg trying to prove a pointless point.

      Delete
    3. Anon, how does dressing in shorts and flip flops make one a mad person? Yes, even to church.

Jesus while on earth was surrounded by followers who were poor and destitute. He never rejected them, even the woman who touched the hem of his garment had been rejected by society because of her disease. Most people healed by Him and who flocked round His table were those cast out of society, beggars and the sick.

You need to change your mindset, if you call yourself a Christian. Even if a person who is seen as mad should decide to come to church, so what? You go to church in your fancy clothes and sit in front, and you return home thinking that you are better than the other ones who dress more homely, are you not a pharisee like that? The Bible says, God looks at the heart, while man looks at the outward appearance.

I am happy that I no longer follow organised Christianity and have left you and your kind far far away.

Matthew 7, 21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ 23 But I will reply, ‘I never knew you.

    4. Why would he wear short to preach. May God help you people. Seems most don't know the calls of God. They think it is hip hop. What a shame

      Delete
    5. Mystique, so because I don't want to think 'I'm better than some people' and because 'God looks at the heart' I should now dress shabbily to church so that I can be view as a 'Christ-like'? Hehehe, you guys won't seize to amaze me. There is still what we call modesty in christianity, you know? We can all do better, abeg

    7. Flexibility is key. You never know the reason why people do stuff.

What if the pastor lost his luggage?

What if he had no immediate cash to buy new clothing?

What if he was irritable because of the weather?

We get the dress to be addressed mantra but sometimes these things don't work! Open your minds

      Delete
    8. He will not wear shorts in A America to preach ooo but in Nigeria he can, the Pastor is wrong

      Delete
    9. Where do ppl get the notion that Christianity means tolerance of EVERYTHING? It's doubtful that these ppl are reading the same Bible we know. The Pastor knew he was coming to the tropics. There are respectable apparels suitable for the occasion and for tropical weather that he could have come with. Using the poor followers in the time of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth, as analogy, does not follow. Those ppl were wearing what they could afford. If u can afford better, then dress accordingly to come to Church. If there was a reason beyond the Pastor's control that he had, for him to feature in shorts and the Church wasn't having it, then so be it. It's their policy and they have their reason/s. It doesn't stop the Pastor from preaching at some other time.

I remember one of the churches I attended recently, I could not believe that the guy who preached was the one who founded the huge church, the school and a lot of charitable project. Very young and simple looking guy in tee shirt and denim.

I carried my bag and followed him to the front when I noticed others were looking at us.

  8. Some years back, I went to my mom's church, one overzealous usher just rudely told me to throw away my gum I was chewing, I just used my eye brows to communicate to her, She got the drift.

Another one, my Mum's church again🀣(I have finally told her not to invite me again). Years back, this usher stopped me from carrying bottled water into the church, I no understand 🀣. I was wondering why and laughing until I got angry and it escalated to other ushers coming to placate me and I didn't understand why I can't hold my water and walk into the church. 2. Mark Morgan, chewing gums in church is totally wrong. I understand the concept of "its my Father's House and i can do what i want". However, a church isn't a social gathering. It's a place of worship, reverence, and communion with God. Respect must be shown at all times.

Also, your gum can even distract your neighbor sitting beside you. Remember, you're not the only person in the church

    Yes oooo few years ago,
My neighbor invited me to holy family prayer group (not sure of the name, the one owned by sis Kate, the prayer holds every Thursday at holy ghost cathedral Enugu) i fixed nude color nails on my toes, you need to see how these ushers shouted at me as if i committed a crime, i was asked to go back and remove the nails, i had to walk all the way from the prayer ground to outside the cathedral, looked for a salon and removed the nails before going back to the prayer ground.

  19. It's really funny and crazy cos all these excuses just shows that the so called pastors or ushers don't have self discipline. My own experience was in Winners Chapel Kubwa.I wore pants(suit trouser) and a lovely decent top (like how you would dress business casual) and sat close to the choir. I was made to change seats cos the Lady (choir member or usher.I can't remember now) said the Holy Spirit will not be present in their song ministrations, abi my trouser wearing will drive the Holy Spirit away( can't remember her exact words. But it was in those lines) . I was embarrassed and felt pity for such shallow minds.

  21. Actually recently something funny happened tho mine was not a church usher. Travelled to spend the summer with my SIL -without my husband. Went to SIL’s church attended midweek services with her and Sunday services On Friday, she mentioned to the pastor that i would be leaving on Sunday (yesterday ) so he said he would pray for me. He called me out and said he can see how I love Christ that his prayer is I truly become born again and embrace this God I was like :/ how can you tell ? I figured it was from my dressing p.s I covered up well nothing was exposed the only thing was I was wearing a kinky wig and but I had a scarf on. Unlike the pastor and other workers that dress like deeper lifers. When we were going home SIL confirmed that’s how they before once you dress okay you are automatically assumed to be worldly that they used to drag her and her daughter
