The people that will succeed in ki.lling us finally are the local women that process our so-called local organic foods.
So, during the Christmas and new year celebrations, I went to greet a family.
On arrival, a wife in the family was about to wash the already peeled cassava to soak for fermentation.
There is a young girl living with her mother-in-law. She quickly told her' auntie' to use detergent and wash the cassava as it serves as a catalyst in the fermentation process.
I open my mouth in amazement. How can you use detergent to wash cassava? What I learnt from my mum was to place bitter leaves on top of the water after soaking it. Which one is detergent kwanu?
Instead of heeding to my advice, she explained further how they still add more detergent to the water used to soak the cassava. According to her, that is the only way it will soften because of harmattan.
Minutes later, after she was done with the whole process, her mother-in-law came back and her first question was' I hope you people used detergent for this cassava?
The whole drama that played out took my memory back to few days before the visit. I was with women of my husband's kindred. While the women were chatting, they made mention of this detergent and cassava stuff. But I wasn't paying much attention. It happened that this was a well-known catalyst amongst them. Another one I heard was the use of kerosene.
The chemicals used in preserving grains are n o longer news. But then, our working system has agencies that ensure we are supplied with healthy foods.
While we can't really do much on our own, I believe we owe ourselves the duty to sensitize our not well-educated and exposed family members and people around us. We can't complain about canned foods while we eat the worst from our farms. Organ failures are on rampage.(copied)
