Edo And Benue States Ban Graduation Parties And Restrictive Textbooks

‎‎Several states are following the lead of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinnma in implementing new education policies aimed at standardizing school practices.
Edo and Benue states have recently introduced similar directives.

In Benue State, a memo addressed to private schools, mission schools, education stakeholders, parents, and guidance counselors outlined the following:

‎Textbooks: The use of restricted, customized educational materials is banned. Schools are directed to revert to the traditional practice of senior students or pupils passing down textbooks to those in lower classes.

‎Extra-Mural Classes: Compulsory extra-m
ural classes are prohibited unless specifically requested by parents.

‎Graduation Parties: Graduation parties for kindergarten, nursery, and basic schools are automatically banned.
‎The memo emphasized strict adherence to these policies starting from the 2025/2026 academic session.

  6. They make the extra mural compulsory, they adjust the time table for the day and include some subjects into the extra mural class time there by making it compulsory

    1. They will simply introduce separate workbooks for each subject. You will then have to buy different workbooks for each child you have. So we are back to square one.

Book producers have nothing to worry about. Instead, we have just found a way to give them more money.

    2. If they introduce work books, it is a 50/50 position. The textbook can still be used on the basis that it cannot be changed for 4 years.

  13. With this policy, we are throwing out the baby with the bathwater. I'm a parent and I can already see where this is going.

Going forward, book publishing houses will now create a separate workbook for each subject. So you will buy textbook and still buy workbook. So have you saved money? No, your costs have doubled.

We don't think things through in this country. Edo state governor that can't add 1 plus 1 is the one bringing policy and others are jumping in.

    1. Yes this will happen with the first child to use the book. Subsequently when that child hands down the textbook to the younger one, only workbooks will be gotten for that younger one

    2. Tulley, thank you for saving me. It's only the workbooks that would be gotten and won't be as expensive as the textbooks every term

    3. And Who says that Government cannot ban workbooks.
We went to school using exercise books and textbooks.
All exercise books are now being returned almost unused yet they were paid for.

Most governments are playing politics with almost all aspects of life in Nigeria today.
If not, school owners would have sat up since.

  14. This is a good development that should be applied at the national level. There are still schools that are considerate. A big kudos to Alljoy Montessori School Idimu Lagos! They have been impacting knowledge without draining parents. I am a satisfied parent.

  15. BV Tuleyy, you can then see that the policy will not achieve much. By introducing workbooks, we are back to square one. Head or tails the book publishing houses and the schools themselves will not lose.

    1. Sir, are you a book printer or publisher? You dogged advocacy for the practice is commendable. If the parents are saved half the amount on books, is it not good?

  16. Great, how I wish it can be extended over the country.

  17. Anything the govt jumps and bans quickly, they have no stake in, it means big men never enter publishing business, na why dey were able to quickly do this. Other things that need their immediate action like this, but becos na dem get the businesses, dem never quickly ban am.

      Are you a parent?
Have you been responsible paying school fees and buying books for a child in the last 4 years?
Which big man do you think can go into book business today and make any profit?

I pay for books at a primary school.
I have been learning the book trade for years.

You appear not to know much of what you wrote about.
But I concede I may be wrong.

  18. other states should join soonest. Enough is enough, parents will pay heavy school fees, plus school party for children who don't even understand what party is all about. You keep buying text books all the times, parents you people have done enough. Is time to have some rest from private school owners, they will not emulate good things but only things that will cause pains to people.

  19. Instead of this state to state, many states are still waiting for their turn and some may not, why not do the needful federal government? Let the federal government do the banning so all states will benefit from it.
