One of the scariest moments of being an hiv positive mother, is that waiting period of when your baby's blood sample is taken after birth to check his or her status. That period was the longest period for me. Hmmmm
The test is called DBS, and I was told the test is done only in South Africa, so the results take time before it comes. I'm always at edge during that period, though if a child test positive at this point, it's most likely the virus will clear cos of the drugs they were given for 6 weeks immediately after birth. My last baby's own almost gave me high BP cos it really took a long time to come out , I was always calling to check.
After the DBs,we did another one after 1 year when baby had already stopped breastfeeding, that one is a bit less scary cos it's normal hiv testing, where you'll get instant result, though I'm always tense during that one too.
Even when we were seeking admission and were asked to do hiv tests, i'm always panicking even though I know it'll be negative but I will still be scared and each time I receive their results,I always give God all the glory.
So you can be positive and still give the baby your milk?
God is great 👍
ReplyDeleteYes. Positive mothers breastfeed their children.
ReplyDeletePoster. You write as someone who always live in fear despite being positive for years and having a supportive husband. I feel the constant fear and panic itself is not good for your health. All the best.
The fear is always there. There's nothing as sweet as living without hiv or any sickness. Though you're not feeling sick but most times you're emotionally down. Thanks for your wishes
DeleteYes Stella, most hiv positive in developing countries breastfeed their babies but most stop early before babies start growing teeth. And you must not mix feed, it's either breast milk or baby formula.
ReplyDeleteI didn’t know positive mum’s can breast feed please educate on that.
