Sowore posted a message on August 25, 2025, calling President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a “criminal” and accusing him of falsely claiming that corruption had ended under his regime during a visit to Brazil.
The DSS labelled the post as “false, malicious, and inciting”, and issued a one-week ultimatum for Sowore to delete it. He refused.
Meta and X also declined to remove the content or suspend Sowore’s accounts, prompting their inclusion in the lawsuit.
The charges cite:
-Section 24 (1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024
-Section 375 of the Criminal Code Act, alleging defamation
-Intent to incite public disorder and undermine national security
Sowore has filed a counter-suit, accusing the DSS, Meta, and X of unconstitutional censorship and violating his freedom of expression under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution. His legal team argues that the government is attempting to silence dissent and set a dangerous precedent for digital speech.
