Single Ladies And The Things To Know Before Moving Into A Rented Place In Nigeria

You have to read this to agree or disagree!

One year of living alone in Lagos as a single lady. Here are things I know now.
I moved out of my parents' place last year and said it's my own house I want.
Here are things I've learnt in case you are planning to move out.

1. Be ready.

You have to be ready. Have a job, like a well-paying job, whether corporate or self-employed.
You should not be living alone and still begging for money from home.

Independence will stretch you.
You’ll learn budgeting, negotiation, fixing small problems, even killing cockroaches.
Every decision will fall back on you. There’s no hiding.
You’ll grow in ways you didn’t expect.

2. Search well, for the right house

Don’t move out of desperation.
Agents can play funny with you because they want to collect agency fee and move on.
If they don’t send you proper videos, don’t waste your time visiting the place for inspection. It won’t match your taste.
If they video only the room and leave out the toilet or kitchen, don’t waste your time.
Make sure to go for proper inspection, and when inspecting, ask the people living on that street questions.

-Do they have light? How often?
-Do they have water?
-Do they have network or does network immediately disappear from your home when you enter your room?
-How do they pay for light?
-Is the place secure, especially at night?
-Do area boys fight on the streets?
-Is the road water-logged during rainy season?
Ask these extremely important questions.
If no one is answering you confidently, please look for another house for your sanity.

3. Bills will humble you. Prepare your mind.

You will suddenly understand the meaning of ‘discipline’ when you see things to buy.
Moving out made me appreciate the sacrifice my parents made even more because how did they do this with KIDS? 5 kids.

4. Pray for unproblematic neighbours.

If you’ve been thinking - is it not to just come back and lock my door, stop it.
You need eyes and ears for things happening around you.
You will understand the meaning of shege when you come back after a long day to wahala.
You don't want your heart beating fast in your own house.
If you've ever experienced difficult roommates, you know what I mean.
I experienced problematic roommates in law school.
I prayed about my neighbours long and hard and God blessed me with the best.

5. Don't bring people home.

Still, as much as possible, keep all affairs outside.
The fact that you are living alone is not a license to bring different people, especially men, into your home.

If he cannot take you outside, he's not worth it, sis.
Before you move out, think about all of these things.
If you have friends who just graduated, working or thinking of living alone, send this to them.
