Nigerian Lawmakers Clash Over Motion Refuting Trump's Religious Persecution Allegations

A motion in Nigeria’s House of Representatives rejecting US President Trump’s assertion of Christian persecution sparked intense debate on Tuesday November 4, 2025 and revealed deep political and religious fault lines.

Hon. Olamijuwonlo Ayodeji Alao-Akala (APC, Oyo State) introduced a motion to formally reject Trump’s claims, asserting that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees religious freedom and that the country should not be mischaracterized on the global stage.

The Lawmakers clashed over whether to defend Nigeria’s global image or confront internal security failures and the session ended in a closed-door meeting, underscoring the issue’s sensitivity.

The motion was eventually adopted, but not without controversy.

  1. You have insecurity that you can't handle, someone asks you to handle it or they do it for you,why are you running around in circles instead of accepting the offer?let's continue image laundry on the global stage while people are being killed
