The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned Ini Edo’s new movie ''A Very Dirty Christmas'' calling the title “offensive and disrespectful” to the Christian faith and demanding a public apology from the actress and producers
CAN, led by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, criticized the film’s title, arguing that associating Christmas with the word “dirty” trivializes and diminishes the spiritual essence of the holiday.
In a statement on Wednesday by Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, the umbrella Christian body said the title trivialises the spiritual essence of Christmas and undermines values held sacred by millions of Christians across the country.
CAN said Christmas represents the birth of Jesus Christ and embodies purity, peace, love and redemption, warning that linking the holy season with the word “dirty” diminishes its spiritual significance.
“Christmas is a sacred season that marks the birth of Jesus Christ and represents purity, peace, love and redemption, and linking such a holy celebration with the word ‘dirty’ diminishes its spiritual meaning and reduces a solemn religious observance to something crude and sensational,” Archbishop Okoh said.
Beyond the religious concerns, the Association raised questions about regulatory oversight, expressing surprise that the film’s title was approved for public exhibition, particularly during the Christmas season. CAN called on the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) to explain how the title passed through official scrutiny.
“The Association is concerned that a film bearing such a title passed through regulatory and professional channels without adequate scrutiny. CAN therefore calls on the National Film and Video Censors Board to explain how the title was approved for public exhibition, particularly during the Christmas season,” Archbishop Okoh stated.
CAN also urged Nollywood’s professional bodies, including the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and other industry stakeholders, to take a firm position on the use of religious themes and symbols in ways that may offend faith communities.

Jesus birth is too sacred for this her nonsense. She should apologise and rename her film ASAP. DeleteI'm in a movie group on fbk. We criticise movies and stuff. I remembered around September, October, we tagged her and told her to please rename this movie. Honestly the tittle doesn't seat well with me but we'll, Christians are known to take lots..

ReplyDeleteFor the past few days, a charlatan and his borderline bed warmer have polluted public discourse with their sordid fornication abi na adultery, criminal conspiracy, demonic plot to silence the story of a crippled woman and her innocent toddler, collecting blood money for the same, bribery, blackmail , fake miracles, abuse of state offices, betrayal of public and pastoral trust and other anti-christ actions. The CAN, always looking for how to needlessly embarrass itself has not uttered a word about these things
On the other hand, a nominal non-muslim borrowed to make a movie using a term that has been an economic reality for the past few years in Nigeria and now, CAN's fingers cannot sit still, desperate for hisses and dragging - do we really need this?
For all the years CAN has complained of the onslaught up north, has there been a country-wide collection for our brothers and sisters by CAN? Has there been a charge to collect money and send to our missionaries and widows or those in the IDP camps by CAN since all these decades? Is there a collection for their medical bills, their retraining, resettlement? Because when Americans come on the scene, people who's country is weary of bearing the world's burden, these are the things they will ask us before they enter the bush.
CAN should have a better reputation than NLC.
It's not a fight about CAN or whatever. It's a fight for your Faith. Put some respect to that and for what Christmas stands for , Period !!
