Abuja Court Frees Boko Haram Victim Ali Kolo After Overserving Nine‑Year Sentence

Justice Peter Odo Lifu of the Abuja Federal High Court has ordered the immediate release of Ali Kolo, a Boko Haram victim who spent over ten years in detention despite receiving a nine‑year sentence for failing to report terrorist activities.

Kolo, who was shot in the right leg by Boko Haram while attempting to alert the military in Borno State, pleaded guilty only to concealment of information. Prosecutors relied on his extra‑judicial statement and an investigation report to request a 10‑year sentence.

The court, however, accepted his explanation that he was unable to report the terrorists because he was critically injured and hospitalized. Justice Lifu ruled that although he technically failed to report the group, the failure occurred under circumstances beyond his control.

By backdating the nine‑year sentence to 2017 the year of his arrest, the judge held that Kolo had already exceeded his term under prison law. He emphasized that Kolo was not convicted of terrorism or weapons training, only of withholding information, and that continued detention would amount to double jeopardy.
Kolo is to be released immediately to seek medical treatment for the gunshot injury.

  1. Now tell me why these youths will not join terrorist groups out of anger.
He was shot and could not report their attacks, they jailed him for nine years.
Terrorists kill , maim and destroy, then surrender but they benefit from skill trained and freed by the government.
    This country is messed up.
Just this morning in the News, several military men and a Brigadier General were killed in Borno in the early hours of today.
    What a country!

  2. What did I just read 😯

He didn’t report the terrorists because he was seriously injured and hospitalized. Yet, a judge still sentenced him.

Is the gunshot injury recent, or is it from 10 years ago?

  3. I've read this news like twice and still don't understand why someone will be jailed for failing to report terrorists. The same people that treats terrorists with kids gloves.
