This neighbour of mine is mentally 'suffocating' me o. He f**ks almost every night with different women. How does he get these women this easy. In all, he still has a serious babe according to him. The pounding and moaning doesn't let me sleep. That's not even my major worries. Why put my mind into what I'm trying to stay away from? I couldn't sleep all through yesterday from 11pm till 3am. If you don't have a depth of vocabulary or proper grasp and understanding of the language, that's fine. Probably my writing is not for you.
ReplyDeleteTatalo Alamu and Brian Browne of The Nation newspaper were the earliest influences and columnists I looked up to and aggressively devoured their columns growing up. Sam Omatseye of the same paper is also a great writer but I have never found his posts appealing. I certainly won't call his writing boring though. It is only boring when the ability to understand, parse, read between lines and study the flow of logic, rhetoric and polemics are absent.
Stella wants me to tone things down a bit. Yes a writer should consider his leadership and possibly cater to them even. But I'll be doing a great disservice to those who actively look forward to my writing if I deviate just for the appeal. They encourage me and I am grateful for that. If it is only those few that look forward to my writing, it is more than enough for me.
Again, I don't write for everyone.

DeleteWhen you write a column, your primary purpose is for people to read it while relaxing. However, commenting on a post is a way of expressing your opinion about that particular post. So, the primary purpose of commenting is to air your view, not for everyone to read.
Well, like you said, your column is not for everyone. Since the primary purpose of a writer has been defeated, there is no need trying to make the writer see reason that columns are created for everyone who comes across them to read while relaxing.
Like I said before, writing is something one is born with. It flows naturally and is not about copying someone else’s style.
Honestly, I like reading your comments, but your column is too long for that kind of writing style.
Imagine reading your column in this hot weather while waiting for Sunday rice on the fire, it will feel like I’m fighting the hot weather, hunger, and comprehension all at once... Lol.

Readership is quite important, but a writer is not obligated to bend to every reader’s preference. What matters is engaging the ideas, not trying to force the writer into a mould that suits one person’s comfort.
I grew up on columns, essays, articles, and editorials from back in time. Different voices, different styles, different weights. What they all had in common was this: none of them wrote for everyone.
That is the nature of art, and column writing cannot be an exception. Every one of them was uniquely written to mirror their perspectives.
Yes, a column and a comment are different. A comment is immediate - a reaction, often shaped in the moment. A column is deliberate. It carries thought, structure, sometimes with due diligence, and the writer’s position over time. Both are valid, but they are not the same thing and shouldn’t be judged by the same standard.
Every writer brings their personality into their work. That personality will attract some readers and lose others. That is not a failure; it is a definition. If everyone reads you the same way, then you are likely saying nothing distinct.
The idea that writing is something one is born with sounds appealing, but it does not hold up. Writing is a skill. It is developed, refined, and sharpened over time. Natural flair exists, yes, but without guidance, discipline and structure, it does not go far.
More importantly, a column is not designed for passive consumption alone. It can challenge, provoke, stretch the reader, even demand effort. Not every piece is meant to be read casually “while waiting for Easter rice.” Some are meant to slow you down. That, too, is part of the experience.
So while preferences differ - and that is fine - they do not set the standard for what a column should be.
Doggedity, your work has substance. It reflects thought and lived experience. The only real adjustment, if any, as said last Thursday, is technical - tightening, pacing, and flow. Not identity. And to an extent, you did that with today's piece.
Readers will come and go. Voice is what stays.
Keep it up. Just that I don't usually have time to go through columns. But the few times I do, I enjoy them.
