Woman Slumps And Passes Away In Court After Three Months In NDLEA Custody

A 52‑year‑old woman, Titilayo Akindele, collapsed and passed away inside the Federal High Court in Benin City on March 31, 2026, shortly after she was brought in for trial three months after her arrest by the NDLEA for allegedly selling “Loud,” a strain of cannabis.....

Her family said she had fallen seriously ill in custody and repeatedly begged for medical attention, even offering to pay for treatment, but claimed their pleas were ignored.

According to her son, she arrived in court visibly weak before suddenly slumping...
This sparked panic in the courtroom and protests from lawyers.

The NDLEA, however, maintained that she walked into the court unaided and appeared fine, with Edo State Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju offering condolences and insisting the agency remains committed to fair treatment and proper health checks for detainees.
