Justice A.O. Opesanwo granted the order after Eurapharma Care Services, the hospital where the child died on January 7, 2026, challenged the legality of the inquest. The hospital argued that since the boy’s body had already been cremated, the coroner lacked jurisdiction to continue.
Respondents in the case include the Lagos Chief Coroner, Attorney-General, Chimamanda Adichie, Dr. Ivara Esege, and Atlantis Pediatric Hospital.
The judge ruled that the hospital’s application raised serious issues of fairness and procedure, and therefore proceedings at the coroner’s court will remain suspended until the judicial review is decided.
The matter was adjourned to June 9, 2026.
