ReplyDeleteSDK, the have completely drained my morale at this point. But their final game against South Korea I will try and be awake at 2 am the scheduled time of that match, because I’m 60% confident based on statistics that it’s time they started packing their bags too and headed home, just like the xenophobic voices in South Africa are always telling fellow Africans from other countries to do.
ReplyDeleteThen you have their captain, Ronwen Williams, urging Africans to unite and saying, “Let’s leave politics to politicians and play football.”
Normally, I’d agree. But how do you separate football from reality when fellow Africans are constantly being harassed, attacked, and made to feel unwelcome? If you’re going to speak about unity, then also have the courage to call on your leaders and citizens to do the right thing and treat other Africans with dignity and humanity.
What makes it even more disappointing is that many of us genuinely supported South Africa. I still remember the excitement across the continent during the 2010 World Cup. Africa celebrated as one when Tshabalala scored that iconic opening goal. There was a real sense of pride because South Africa wasn’t just representing itself, it was representing all of us.
Sadly, that spirit feels long gone. Instead of confronting a problem that has damaged the country’s image across Africa, too many people seem determined to downplay it, excuse it, or pretend it doesn’t exist.
It’s heartbreaking because this is the same country that gave the world “Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Brenda Fassie “ people who stood for unity, justice, and the dignity of all Africans. Looking at where things are today, it’s hard not to feel disappointed.
At the end of the day, though, these people aren’t worth this much of my energy. I’ve said my piece. I’m done. 🤦🏽♂️
The time difference is not making it easy to keep up with some games. The ones I've seen so far has been good except one...
