So this year, instead of the usual Children's Day celebration in school, management decided to take the children out for a proper outing.
A park on the Island was booked. The children would have games, rides, food, gifts ..... the works.
Now, because of the outing, the fee was increased from what parents paid last year. According to management, the experience and the gift package would be "one of a kind."
Teachers were encouraged to remind parents to pay.
And when I say encouraged, fellow teachers know what I mean.
Nobody would directly tell you, "Collect the money."
But somehow, you are expected to magically convince every parent in your class to pay.
This year, I didn't have that ginger.
Children's Day was falling close to Sallah. Many parents were travelling, some preferred spending the day with their children themselves, and honestly, I couldn't bring myself to pressure anyone.
A day before the outing, only 9 out of my 20 pupils had paid.
I submitted my list.
The look on my Headmistress's face.
"So you can't call your parents to pay?"
I replied, "I can't force people to pay."
She looked at the list again "It shows."
Ah.
"What happened to the other 11? As if I had hidden them somewhere
Normally, teachers accompany their classes on outings.
Dress code was sent. Instructions were given.
We had mentally prepared ourselves for a day of running after children under the hot sun.
I got to school early that morning, checked attendance, organized my pupils, and made sure every child who paid was seated in the correct bus.
Then I started noticing something strange.
Teachers were getting off the buses.
One by one.
I asked what was happening. One of my colleagues whispered,
"The HM told me to get down. Check the WhatsApp group."
Haa.
I checked.
My name had been removed from the outing list too. Ahaaa
Just like that. No explanation. Nothing.
I looked through the final list of teachers going and quickly noticed a pattern.
Most of them were coming from classes with higher payment numbers.
