Pride promotes self-reliance. It tells us we can indeed do things on our own. In our attempt to walk in self-confidence, we slam the door in God's face and shut out the work of the Holy Spirit, our Helper. Paul was educated, sophisticated and consecrated, yet he humbly declared, 'I am the least of all the apostles. In fact, I'm not even worthy to be called an apostle after the way I persecuted God's church. But whatever I am now, it is all because God poured out his special favour on me - and not without results. For I have worked harder than any of the other apostles; yet it was not I but God who was working through me by his grace' (1 Corinthians 15:9-10 NLT).
No matter how much ability you possess, without God, it will only take you so far. Jesus said, 'I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing' (John 15:5 NIV).
The source of our confidence should be God and not ourselves. When the plans of those walking in God-confidence go awry, they are wise enough to subordinate their desires to the sovereign will of God. They quickly remind themselves, 'Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails' (Proverbs 19:21 NIV). They are convinced that God has a higher purpose for their lives, and that no man can thwart it. So practise God-confidence rather than self-confidence.

ReplyDeleteI sat down with someone yesterday, and during our conversation, he told me he was very happy.
Curious, I asked, "What happened? Did you win a billion contract?
He smiled and shook his head.
Then he said, "My sister called me early this morning just to check on me.
I laughed and said, "Is that all?"
He looked at me and replied, Zaram,, you won't understand.
Then he explained.
My people only call when they need something. But today, my sister called without asking for anything. She simply spoke to me in our language and said, 'You have been on my mind. I just wanted to know how you and your family are doing.'
As he spoke, I could see how much that simple call meant to him.
He even told me he was already planning to surprise her with a gift just because she cared enough to call.
That conversation stayed with me. There is so much toxicity in the air today. Many people are carrying burdens we know nothing about. Some are battling emotional pain, illness and financial struggles behind closed doors. Some are not even sure where the next meal will come from.
Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give someone is not money. It is your concern and a simple message that says:
I was thinking about you. How are you doing?"
Don't only call people when you need something.
Call because you care.
Be kind. You may never fully understand how much that small act of love means to someone.
And you, when someone checks up on you, don't use that opportunity to bill them or drop all your problems on them.
