A friend shared a story about tension within her blended family. One of her step siblings had been upset with her because she confronted another sibling about gradually distancing herself from the family after relocating abroad.
The sibling in question is the first child of their mother with another man, while my friend and her two younger siblings were born after their mother married their father.
The step sibling felt she should have been included in the conversation instead of being left out. However, my friend said that she had her reasons and that they did not grow up together, so they never developed a close bond and their relationship only began to form after their mother passed away.
She also had information that the step sibling had spoken negatively about her family on several occasions and because of this, she respected her as a sibling but did not want to force a closeness that had never grown naturally.
When the younger sibling vowed never to speak to her again, she initially ignored it. Later, she told me that she considered that perhaps her sibling simply wanted the family to be more united now that their mother was gone. With that in mind, she reached out and mentioned she would be visiting the area and hoped to stop by. The gesture was dismissed, so she decided not to pursue it further.
The sibling reached out a few times afterwards, but my friend says that she felt they did not connect on many levels and did not see the need to force a relationship, especially when she remembered the hurtful things that had been said about her family.
Even so, she believed that one day they would sit down, resolve their differences and move forward as siblings but for now, she accepted the situation as it was.
I told her that One day they will make peace because of the same blood flowing in their veins but for now she should not try to force anything at all but our other friend does not think my advice is good ad i wonder what i should have said...
Step sibling and half sibling dey always confuse me...sometimes i have to actual check before i put mouth....The ones that a parent connects them settle better than the ones brought together by different parents...Your advice was good....

ReplyDeleteMy birthday was July 12 and I decided to resurrect my baking skills. Went to the market to get baking items (very expensive o). Because we didnt have light on Saturday and they brought it on Sunday, I thought it came to stay. Nepa allowed me do all the mixing and creaming, and few minutes after i put the cake banter in the oven, the light went off. Ori mi gbona wa. I thought it was all those their jokes of taking and bringing. 5, 10, 15 minutes, no light yet. Chai. To cut the story short, the cake got spoilt and was wasted. I threw it away. Yesterday, I decided to try again. The outcome was super. That kind of cake you are proud to share with your colleagues. Not a pro yet but I put it to you, if I keep practicing, ama be a pro soon. We go again this weekend. Maybe this time, chocolate.

Hearing of mothers wailing and parents losing multiple children at once puts the fragility of life into sharp perspective. Losing over 20 precious children and school staff on their return from an educational excursion is a pain no parent should ever have to bear. No words can mend such unbearable pain.

NFJ, that step/half sibling rivalry is something one cannot control, even full siblings fight. Just leave them, they will settle if it is meant to happen.
