Senate Moves Forward With Bill Requiring Social Media Companies To Open Offices In Nigeria

Nigeria’s Senate has taken a major step toward tightening oversight of global social media platforms, advancing a bill that would require companies like Facebook, X, TikTok and others to establish physical offices within the country.

Sponsor of the bill, Senator Ned Nwoko, said the proposal is aimed at improving accountability, creating jobs and attracting investment not stifling innovation or digital expression.
The bill received strong support during a public hearing, with several stakeholders backing the move as a way to strengthen regulation and ensure platforms operating in Nigeria have a local presence. It will now proceed to the next stage of legislative review before any final decision is made.
