EASIER SAID AS A CHILD

As a child, using liquid milk to make tea in my house was like flying on plantain leaves, to the moon.

Liquid milk was reserved for the elites.

When my mom wanted to make tea, she'd use sachet milk and would make sure she fills my jug with sweetened water!

Not Tea!

One day, she brought condensed peak milk, she used half of it, tore some paper off of it, covered the holes she drilled on top and kept in the fridge.

I would later go to taste the milk and mehn, nothing sweet pass condensed milk for this life!

Absolutely nothing!

So i started saving money to buy a tin!

One day one day, my money complete.

I didn't want to get from around, cos they might snitch so i got from a shop near my school.

I got home, i drilled two holes in it and when this goodness hit my tongue, i almost wept!

Like, tears of joy ran down my cheeks!

I drank half, used paper to do it the way my mom did hers and hid it under the bed...didn't want to use the fridge cos my mom might see it.

My mom came back from the shop.

Tu secons later, she said she was feverish.

Tu secons later, she said she was looking for Aboniki.

Tu secons later, she ran her hand under the bed and brought up her Aboniki balm, as well as my half drank condensed milk.

She looked at me.

I looked at her.

Tu secons later, i was confessing to how i got the money to buy it cos there was a huge belt in front of me.

Tu secons later, i was in Togo!

Every part of me screamed in pain.

She gave me the milk to pour away.

As i stood in my Togolese kitchen, pouring away my gold, i swore that when i got older and had plenty money, i would a carton of condensed peak milk, every gaddam day!

Well, i am now an Adult

Ask me the last time i had Condensed milk?

That very day, my mom discovered it, under the bed!

A WOMAN CAN MAKE IT WITHOUT A MAN

Dear young lady, you must settle it in your mind early that you can earn money and a lot of it without depending on a man. Your standard of living, dignity, peace of mind, and survival should never be tied completely to the generosity or presence of a man in your life.

Today, there are women building companies, leading industries, raising families, creating jobs, and doing remarkable things across different fields. Some are married. Some are not. But what stands out is that they are not living from desperation. They have capacity, competence, and confidence in themselves.

Let such women inspire you.

This is important because when survival is your primary reason for attaching yourself to a man, your judgment can become compromised. You may ignore terrible character, emotional abuse, manipulation, disrespect, or even violence simply because you are afraid of losing financial support.

Money matters in life. Provision matters too. Nobody should pretend otherwise. A responsible man should be hardworking and capable of carrying responsibility. But money alone is not enough reason to build a life with someone.

Peace matters.

Character matters.

Kindness matters.

Emotional safety matters.

It is better to remain single than to be trapped in a miserable marriage where your soul is slowly dying while outsiders think you are “settled.”

At the same time, independence should not become arrogance or hostility toward men. The goal is not to “prove men are useless.” The goal is to become whole enough that love becomes a choice, not a survival strategy.

Marriage works best when two complete adults come together to build, support, and strengthen one another. Not when one person becomes the other person’s lifeline for existence.
