Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised the version of democracy practised across much of Africa, describing it as an imported system that does not fit the continent’s realities.
He says the Western model has created a winner‑takes‑all culture that turns elections into a zero‑sum contest, leaving large sections of the population marginalised after voting.
Obasanjo likened the borrowed system to wearing clothes that do not fit, and stressed that Africa must rethink its governance structures and build inclusive, values‑driven models that promote peace, stability and economic progress instead of blindly copying foreign frameworks.
We have to move with the times. Things that were not a problem when Obasanjo was president 27 years ago might be a problem today. Using our brains to analyse issues in life is very important.
