Actor Lere Paimo Disputes Pete Edochie’s Claim As Nollywood’s Most Senior Actor
Veteran Yoruba actor Lere Paimo a.k.a Eda Onile Ola, has disagreed with Pete Edochie’s recent claim of being Nollywood’s most senior actor.
Pete Edochie said he began acting in 1962 at age fifteen and challenged anyone older in the craft to come forward.
Responding in an interview with Kunle Afod, the eighty six year old Lere Paimo said he started acting professionally in 1958, four years before Edochie. He added that the Yoruba travelling theatre led by Hubert Ogunde, which began in the 1940s, proves that indigenous film and theatre existed long before English‑language productions.

ReplyDeleteBaba Lere Paino is very correct as a person in her mid sixties, I and many people grew up watching theatre plays or television plays on television and in theatres when we were young. Actors like Baba Ogunde, Baba Sala, Baba Mero, Ade love, Ajimajasan, etc were representing Africa and Nigerian, abroad at film festivals in Europe and America with world wide recognition, as far back. At the level they were operating, most of them were Yorubas. They laid the foundation. Let's give them their dues. They were internationally known. This is why things should be documented properly. A museum should be established with all their lures and awards on display with the dates as evidence.

ReplyDeleteWhat Pete said is totally alien to common-sense and logic. Television in Africa started in Ibadan in 1959. People were acting since there in Ibadan and other parts of Western Region, long before television got to other parts of Nigeria, common sense should have told Pete that some people acted long before him and some of them are still alive.
ReplyDeleteLere Paimo has been there long before people like Pete, he is one of the last persons of his set, but he is still alive.
The celluloid movies were acted and largely dominated by the people from the west, Ade Afolayan, Ogunde, among others.
Mama Grace Oyin Adejobi just clocked 96 years. She probably started acting before Pete was born.
