Her son, Nkanu (one of her twin boys) died in January 2026 while the family was in Lagos for the holidays. What began as a mild fever led to a hospital visit at Euracare Multi‑Specialist Hospital, where the toddler was sedated with propofol for an MRI. Chimamanda said a doctor later told her he had been given too much of the drug. He went into cardiac arrest and died the next day, just as the family was preparing to fly him to Johns Hopkins Hospital for further care.
She has publicly accused the hospital of medical negligence. Nigeria’s Medical and Dental Council found enough grounds to investigate the doctors involved, while a coroner’s inquest has faced delays and legal hurdles. The family says they are not focused on lawsuits — they want answers and better healthcare standards so no other family suffers the same pain.
When asked if Nigeria still felt close to her heart, she replied: “I do not want to go back to Nigeria.”

ReplyDeleteHer feelings are perfectly understandable. A child she brought home on holidays ended up dead due to somebody's carelessness and incompetence. She will never get over that pain,especially as she still has his twin brother. I cant even imagine the pain she must be going through. Nigeria will always represent that pain, most especially when she knows that the baby may not have died if she hadn't brought him to Nigeria.
