The warning was issued on Friday, September 11, 2026, in Lagos by the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, during a courtesy visit from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law, led by Moshood Abiola.
During the interactive session, Kaltungo expressed concern over lawyers who engage in practices that violate professional and financial regulations and stressed that the Commission would not hesitate to prosecute any Legal Practitioner found culpable.

ReplyDeleteThere is no law that stops a lawyer from charging in foreign currencies.
The EFCC cannot assume the role of the legislative arm, interpret the law and still be the ones to execute the law. And in this case, no such law even exists.
Moreso, the EFCC is not empowered to make practice rules for lawyers. You cannot regulate a profession that you're not a member of.
Even the directive of the CJN that lawyers should stop addressing themselves as "Barristers" did not even see the light of day, because the CJN does not have the power to regulate all legal practitioners.
In summary, this is dead on arrival. I'm sure several lawyers have already filed suits challenging this directive.
