Lagos Assembly Reportedly Planning Bill To Ban Street Begging
The Lagos State House of Assembly has held a public hearing on a new bill seeking to ban street begging and clear street urchins from public places.
The Street Begging and Street Urchins Prohibition Prevention and Rehabilitation Law 2026 aims to stop begging at traffic lights, bridges, markets and motor parks, citing rising security concerns. The bill proposes rehabilitation for first offenders, fines or short custody for second offenders, and up to two years imprisonment for repeat offenders. Children found begging would be handled under the Child Rights Law, and parents who send them out to beg or hawk would face penalties.
