Irene Myangoh, a personal assistant working at a law firm in Nairobi went to an upmarket hair salon along Kenyatta Avenue, and spent more than N5,500 on a human hair weave.
Two weeks later she started suffering from severe headache that would not go away. She would wake up with severe headache at night.
She went to a private doctor who gave her drugs for the relief of mild to moderate pain of inflammatory origin with or without fever; they would only work for a few hours and then the headache would be back worse than even before.
Desperate, she went to see a specialist who did blood tests and even a brain scan. All the tests were negative but the headache persisted, making her unable to concentrate at work and sleeping very poorly.
She went back to her doctor who decided to examine her scalp and under the beautiful weave he found worms!
The worms were burrowing into her skull and after sending the samples to the lab they found that the hair had eggs from which the worms had Irene had to shave after this ordeal and took antibiotics for two weeks.

Elsewhere, 16-year-old girl from Buruburu, a Nairobi surburb, also suffered the same fate but unfortunately for her she died. Cobweb eggs were found in her hair after she died.
There was a profound cobweb design in her weaved hair. She dropped dead after constant headaches.
The root cause? The weave had unnoticed spider eggs. The warmth produced after weaving provided a very conducive environment for the eggs to hatch.
A spider grew in her scalp and bit her. The poison found its way to her blood. She could not survive the attack.culled

DeleteCheap products: coconut oil, shea butter, leave in conditioner.
DeleteCorrect products for coils: moroccan oil conditioner, eco styler gel, sulphate free shampoo try African pride shea moisture with their leave in too.
Natural hair just needs a lot of moisturising and conditioning. Braid and twist too. Keeps the moisture locked in and allows the hair to grow. Good luck

ReplyDeleteDon't wash your weaves and keep. Wash and air dry before you use and just before you sew in, heat in the dryer for about 10 mins.
Also the weaving shouldn't be tight. When it's tight the discomfort can lead to itching and infection.
Also ladies, don't buy your problems. Buy good hair. It's better to spend good money and buy it once than waste money buying Crap over and over again. Otherwise stick to braids and plaits or invest in a wig.
I do not recommend relaxer..ehn ehn! That's even worse for you. Before you know it alopecia will be your portion. Natural hair rocks in all.
Nigerians ladies and the other type of "Ladies" who wear weaves, human hair is an enhancement, which is not totally necessary. But for those of you who "Gostaahavit" whether necessary or not, there are other types of hair that can be used which are almost as close to Real hair as can be. I would give out a number of a renowned place where you can buy processed hair which is similar to human but is factory manufactured if asked. There's really no point wearing all these silly Peruvian, magnolia Indian and all the crappy hair of which, no one really knows the source. Remember there are people who die on the streets who have long hair, whose bodies are not claimed unfortunately. In a country where the Hair business is booming, can you imagine where these hairs end up. You don't know if it is a mad person's hair you are wearing or about to buy. Many around me go for processed synthetic hair which is equally expensive but safer and even more manageable than these hazardous weaves. Having said that, many will still buy what is available and in vogue. All I can say is, if you buy a weave pack, boil it before you head out to the stylist. It might lose its initial shine, but to be safe is better than being sorry and also with a good spray sheen, you can get your boiled weave back to its shiny glossy look. Nothing beats the real deal, your own hair, but in cases where you want to Play with the extra, be safe and try staying away from second hand used weaves. Also, wearing a weave does not mean you don't have to wash. Treat all weaves like your own hair because sewn in hair could also be a breeding ground for lice ticks and all those creepy crawlies. Happy weaving.

ReplyDeletesome people dont wash and treat weaves. use dettol and warm water to wash ur weaves after u remove. infact, i soak mine in shampoo and warm water and dettol once i remove, for like 30 mins. then i use conditiner on it, comb it out, rinse and dry under hot sun. but many just buy and wear. apart from worms and thinz, for hygiene purposes nko? face it! some women are careless about their hygiene. just like they buy new undies and wear before washing, they seat on any toilet, they share eyeliner pencils, they dont even soak their undies in disinfectant or change sheets often. haba! no be so oh. even their powder puff and brushes, they can use for months without washing it, yet they complain about pimples and facial issues and spend money on facial treatments. please, lets be careful as women. as we dey pack things dey use, we suppose dey careful too.

ReplyDeleteThis is not new, it's not just in the weaves, it can happen any where. Years ago, a 9 year old girl had braided hair with packed pony tail on top of the head and had same complaints for a while of headaches. It was after death they realized that a spider must have crawled in to the oponytail and laid eggs maybe when she was sleeping. Lesson here is, let your hair down or out every so often and inspect it, even f ok r braids.

You guys are taking this too far. Its all about hygiene. You buy new panties and don't wash, buy new toothbrush and don't soak in hot water before use.... You're prone to infection. The list goes on. Besides, what human hair out there goes for N5k?

Am Kenyan and I read the original article.The lady working at a law firm bought her weave from the upscale salon where she had her hair done.This is a batch of hair imported from China and elsewhere,so the fair sold very fast.When the doctor did a scalp biopsy on her,the kind of worms he discovered are normally found on dead bodies.They are microscopic you can't see them with naked eye & besides I don't think washing the weave would help.
