I hear the lonely wife has found solace in digital TV on a channel on DSTV called Telemundo,true?
Latina\Mexican soap operas are the theme of this channel and I Reliably Gathered that the real housewives,Those Who live in Lekki, VGC and Ajah, and perhaps others scattered all over Nigeria, depend on Mexican soaps to survive the lonely hours at home.
Wives whose Husbands have forbidden them to work or do anything are now employed free of charge by this channel.
Some forget to cook and/or beg others to do school runs for them just because of Telemundo.
The question is, is this a form of escapism healthy? Can watching TV kill the pain of an abusive marriage? Has a social epidemic spread and still spreading beyond redemption?
Are Mexican soaps the lonely housewife's today's mills and boom?
Never liked Mexican soaps, but whatever helps people cope is fine. As long as it doesn't harm them or anyone else.

And it's never a way to escape abusive marriage cos after watching, the reality is still there to stare you right in the face. This form of escapism is never healthy,its better to deal with ur issues head on than try to run away from it via watching Telemundo or any other channel. That's my take.

I am a well educated woman who chooses to be at home with the kids for their formative years instead of leaving them to the shenanigans of nannies and drivers. I have a very active life with friends from all works of life, so this notion of the 'lekki' wife as a gossiping materialistic being who watches telemundo all day because her Lord and master forbade her from working just made me roll my eyes all the way back into my skull. I understand that a household with two incomes may be necessary to give many families a decent lifestyle but please can we stop with the stereotypes?

It can be crazy staying @home all day, so just a little something to get by, might not necessarily be for d money. I have a house wife friend, who actually sell tasty ice cream/kid for kids after school right there in her home, she just get supplies from cake makers n an ice cream shop, she is not doing it for d money, cos her hubby is super loaded n doesn't want her to work, despite pleas frm all her family members, her hubby still refused.

So it means that you might end up doing nothing during the weekend apart from watching telemundo. Even if you watched all the episodes during the week you will still want 2 watch on Saturdays and sundays. Stella it is Soooo addictive.

My dear same with me. I remember calling dstv 2 clear e16 message and complained of how boring dstv is plus the repetition of movies from morning till night. All the customer care rep could say was madam don't u watch telemundo, .likes seriously who watches dat shit. .

Abeg, is their life let them be, one episode is been repeated 3 to 4 times a day even the nest day, some people are addicted to telemudo the way they are to young blog. Telemudo is one of my favorite channel on dstv

He watches the thing at home, in the office, totally hogs the remote o. E remain for us to revolt sef. Worst part is on the weekends when he's home, Na so so my heart beats for lola and Aurora person go dey look. I tried to start watching it as well but the lip-talking is so off putting. I don't get what people see in it though. I just wanted to comment and disillussion you of the stereotype that only housewives watch it o. Serious macho men do as well
ReplyDeleteHmm Telemundo, I used to be sooo addicted to Precious Rose and My heart beats for Lola in those days that everybone knew me, even when I travel I had to instruct the hotel staff to change the channel to telemundo, and the worst is whenever I go to the family house and Nepa takes light(no gen set) see me going to friends' houses to watch and even collecvt insult on top of Telemundo, After those series ended, I decided to stop only for me to resume back sometime ago because the person Iwas staying with is addicted to it, infact the tv is always stationed on telemundo even her hubby has surrendered oh and even joined her, no be small thing sha, she not only watches all the telemundo series, she go still waka go Joy tv to watch the Return, wetin I fo do but to join her naa

DeleteMy experience. Couldn't watch Forbidden Passions @ 10pm last night cos of d 9pm football match. So got up early dis morning to watch a re-run @ 5:20am and PHCN struck by 5:16. Tonite's episode will be an entirely new one. Can't watch d week's episodes during d wkend cos i'll be really busy (market, cooking, kids activities etc). That's why it's saddening to some of us when we miss an episode. O and by the way, I work as a senior accounts executive so no time during the day.

Well SDK its not just for lonely wife alone ooo I rem wen d channel was introduced 2 dstv last year u need to see how we discuss d programmes in d ofis. But now I choose to let go if dia is lite I wil watch if not I don't stress myself to put on d gen to watch it like I use to do last nite Thank God its world cup self so once I close 5pm from d ofis I watch. Matches cos I luv football. But mehn can't wait to see d ending of cruel luv, forbidden passion n labour of love. Fearless heart coming soon. DeleteI hate the channel so much for several reasons one of which is that i have to watch the damn thing when my wife is watching other wise i wont rest. She likes football as well which means we watch football together we watch telemundo together. Those things are worse than nollywood movies just that they have better fashion sense.

ReplyDeleteI am a career woman but once I get home from work, my kids change the channel to 118 because they know that's my favourite channel. My husband used to complain that I was obsessed with Telemundo. By the time he watched 2 of the soaps with me, he became addicted too. He is now worse!!
ReplyDeleteHe watches the reruns during weekends since he is very busy during week days. DSTV has finally given me something of value for my money. In the past, I'd simply flick through channels endlessly and end up totally bored. But now, 118 is my go to channel.
