Senate To Ban Street Begging

The Senate on Tuesday described street begging as a menace that is embarrassing the country.

It therefore began a move to enact a law that will make street begging illegal.
The lawmaker representing Bauchi-Central Senatorial District, Senator Isah Hamma Misau, while moving a motion titled, ‘Menace of Street Begging and the Need to Rehabilitate Beggars,’ expressed concern over the spate of street begging and nuisance it constitutes on the streets of city centres across the country.

“Though street begging is a global urban problem, the situation in Nigeria appears intractable and overwhelming, as beggars are now found everywhere, especially at motor parks, religious centres, road junctions, venue of ceremonies and other public places,” he said.

According to Misau, beggars were persons with physical and mental challenges or grossly indigent in the past.

“In recent times, there appear to be a new vogue of beggars in town, derisively known as corporate beggars, who take advantage of the sympathy of the society for the less privileged to remain jobless and at times perpetrate crimes in the name of street begging,” the senator noted.

Punch cullage.

*This senate sef..lol

  1. Corporate begging is even worse than street begging. Security men and gatemen will keep begging like their lives depend on it. Its so embarrassing, meanwhile they are working for their own money oh.

  2. You think these people like to beg?
The failure of the system has made these people to realize the merits of begging and would refuse it cos uts very lucrative

  4. While I agree with their argument I think it'll be almost impossible to eradicate street begging. How do they intend to tackle the beggars colony for example?

It's an institution on its own and I doubt very much that any government can stop those people. They have associations and they will not agree to any other means of livelihood. Their children are born into the colony and they take up the begging mantle. They know nothing else but begging.

My only concern are the thieves who disguise as beggars to rob unsuspecting victims in traffic. For this reason alone I support the motion.

    OK bye

  5. The roof is leaking yet you think changing the locks will settle everything... No no, it doesn't work that way.

You guys should work on the economy, once its value has been reinstated, then taming the nature of begging in this country would be so easy.

You can't be running and be scratching your anus at the same time, pick a struggle. Either you work on the Economy or you let the masses fend for themselves.

  11. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE. THEY HAVE REFUSED TO LET NIGERIANS EAT BY WITHHOLDING MONEY AND LETTING THEM GO HUNGRY. THEY HAVE MADE SURE THAT NOTHING IS WORKING IN NIGERIA FOR THE COMMON MAN AGAIN AND HAVE TURNED THEM TO BEGGARS.NOW THEY WANT TO DENY THEM THAT CHANCE. WELL, I BLAME THOSE THAT VOTED THESE HEARTLESS HUMANS INTO OFFICE WHETHER APC OR PDP.

  14. Yes, the rate of beggers in Nigeria is alarming and something should be done; but I expect more from senate. Have they actually thought about why these people beg? They should think of how to create job opportunities for beggers so they can leave the streets instead of just sending them away like that. How would they feed their families, esp in this trying times...
Although most of these beggers are lazy and would rather sit down and beg than work.

  16. Dear Nigerian Senate

On behalf of Reasonable Blog visitors, we appeal the Proposed ban be annulled.

We are currently battling with the high rate of beggars on our blog. If this ban pulls through it will propel some beggars to acquire cheap browsing phones, thereby increasing the number of beggars on here.

In a situation where we have more beggars to reasonable commenters on a blog, there'll be chaos.

Please leave the street beggars on the street or create a haven for them.

    Yours Faithfully,
IDL on behalf of SDK reasonable blog visitors

  19. Those Hausa beggers are the most annoying set of people. Their mum or guide normally brings them to Lekki phase 1 gate, sits at a corner eating anything that passes and making calls while laughing away, while the little kids beg under the sun from bus stop to the gate without rest. Those ones should be proved.

  20. in as much as measures will be put in place to provide other means of livelihood for the beggars, I don't have a problem with the banishment, but if otherwise the senate will only increase the crime rate nationwide, because the beggars will need to survive. Good morning people...

  25. This is the most clueless government ever, maybe at Some point this bill would come in handy, but for now, do the needful, there are other important decisions that'll determine the future of this country to be made... why not take it a step at a time, with a good scale of preference? Well.. I give up on this country mehnn
