Nigerian Govt Increases WAEC And NECO Fees Citing Rising Operational Costs

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a new uniform fee for the WAEC and NECO Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations, raising the cost to ₦50,000 per candidate starting from 2027.

This replaces the old fees, where WAEC charged ₦27,000 and NECO charged ₦30,000. The government said the harmonised fee would streamline administration and reflect rising operational costs.

The decision followed a meeting held on March 31, 2026, between the Minister of Education and the examination bodies. WAEC had requested an upward review due to increasing expenses.

A memo dated June 18, 2026, from the Federal Ministry of Education confirmed the approval. It was signed by Adeniji Ibrahim, Director of Senior Secondary Education, on behalf of the Minister.

The memo stated:
“Consequently, I am directed to convey the Honourable Minister of Education’s approval of the sum of Fifty Thousand Naira (₦50,000) only, as the new examination fee for candidates with effect from NECO SSCE Internal 2027.”
