Nigeria And The Oldies Gravity Defying Hairstyles From The 60's

'Sculptures for a day': Nigerian photographer J.D. Okhai Ojeikere snapped over 1,000 photos of the hairstyles he saw on the street

Celebrities and entertainers who style their hair in attention-grabbing ways (think Lady Gaga's plaited cone or Nicki Minaj's towering bouffant) are often lauded for their originality. But intricate hairstyles are far from being a contemporary development - as J.D. Okhai Ojeikere's photographs show.

Upbraided: Ojeikere took photos of the styles he saw worn by women in the street, or in offices, or at marriage celebrations

Architectural lines: Ojeikere's portraits demand to be viewed in the abstract

Medusa-like

Tight curls

Buns galore: This look has a fun polka dot effect

Futuristic sworls

Picturesque bows

The photographer spent the Sixties and Seventies documenting the hairstyles of the women he encountered in his native Nigeria. He snapped over 1,000 photos of these complex coiffures, from subjects he found on the streets, in offices, and at wedding celebrations

These hairstyles have been over taken by the modern day hairstyle.........indian hair, peruvian hair, snake hair, wall gecko hair.

I am wondering if these hairstyles wouldnt be great for a church wedding?would look great and unique.
Nigeria has lost so much in terms of preserving our culture....right?

    2. When all things fail, try God. Start speaking to that mouth to be clean and smell fresh in Jesus name. Command anything that brings mouth odor to die and pass out of your body in Jesus name.
People learn to put God first...HE said whatever you ask in my name, I will do it. God is good and HIS Word is bankable. Don't give up.

  11. Wow!!! very nice pictures. This remind me of my younger day when those local hair dresser will clap your head so tight between their laps so you won't move when plaiting your hair.
Hmmmm Wickedness. Instead of them to bribe you with some goddy goddy to stay put.

  13. Oh such beautiful hair styles, that why i went back to natural hair styles. After punishing my hair with brazillian hair weaves for years. i have learnt to appreciate my culture, because our culture is so rich in creativity, art and beauty. That's why the western world love our culture alot.

  14. You loose what you don't appreciate or cherish. In our (Africans) bid to copy copy other cultures. If the westerners do these styles, we will wow over it, forgetting we had it first. Colonial mentality plus inferiority complex. We can still move with the times while developing berra ways to do African hair and make it more classy too.

  19. The traditional hairstyles of Nigeria are a fascination to me You When you ladies meet or see each other on the street, you look at the weave. Us guys are looking a the face and the curves. lol. I have seen some very beautiful Nigerian women and I have several blogs on my site highlighting the beautiful women of Nigeria and West Africa. My Nigerian partner and I will be searching Nigeria and other sub-Saharan nations for 24 beautiful women through Radio and TV advertisements and auditions. Dream Path Production, LLC , and American production company will soon bring a new and unique reality tv show to Nigeria. My African Love will follow an American bachelor on his dual quest of exploring his roots and searching for a bride form among 24 beautiful African women. The Nigerian hairstyle culture will work to our advantage (and the advantage of the contestants) because we cannot allow hairstyles to change during production. Some of the footage from the filming session that is completed in week 9 may be edited into week 2 along with other footage filmed in week 2. This show will be talked about from week to week ans season to season It will be filled with suspense, drama, heart warming, heart breaking emotions that are all a part of the journey to falling in love. It will provide entertainment while highlighting the most positive aspect of Nigeria's traditions ans culture and the bachelor explores his roots. i invite you to visit www.myafricalove.com and the blog site www.blogmyafricanlove.com for complete details
