WERE YOU BORN WITH 'NIGHT BLINDNESS'?..How Do You Cope?

Dear Stella,

I hope u r doing great? I have a medical condition since birth and I want to know if there are other people out there suffering from it and how life is with them!

Please share on your Blog.

I was born with night blindness and ever since I don't know what a normal night life is like because once its 6:30pm am indoors! I can't see except with a torchlight which is limited to an environment I know well! Even when there is electrical light am limited not to talk of total darkness! Not just at night, when I enter a room with dim lights in broad day light,I can't see! It has really ruined my social and religious life as I can't attend any function that starts from 6pm upwards! It affects my relationships too as I don't know how to open up to anyone am dating because of the fear of being taken advantage of!

The optometrists visited said it doesn't have a cure so can't be treated but managed as its genetic! My parents don't have it! Most times I get depressed! But what can I do?

Am a young lady in her early twenties! Its really depressing seeing myself being caged without a key to unlocking it. I have cried,i have lamented but at the end of the day I realised they do me more harm than good! Imagine giving lame excuses to your boyfriend on why you can't hang out with him at night,at a point I ran out of them! While in the university I couldn't live in the hostel because communal life is out of it for me! Its easier being blind and everyone can see you are than when you look very healthy yet you are suffering! I avoided having female friends coming to close so as not to notice. As a Corper camp was a no no! How I wan follow do early morning exercise? I had to find a way and stayed out of camp. This is one lifestyle I will never wish my greatest enemy!

Is there anyone out there who is suffering from this?how do you cope?

  3. Its not true that Night blindness is untreatable. Please visit a Teaching Hospital and let a competent doctor examine your eyes

  5. What you have dear is called retinitis pigmentosa, it is hereditary and gets worse finally getting to tunnel vision. What you need are low vision aids to help you live as normal a life as possible. Pls go to your nearest teaching hospital or a good eye clinic that can refer you to a specialist low vision clinic. I am an optometrist and I know not all my colleagues are properly trained in this field so

    1. You're spot on. I was recently diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa and it can be extremely frustrating. Driving is a problem especially at night. I keep bumping into things on the floor and above my head. I always assumed I'm just clumsy. Hopefully, a cure is developed in our lifetime.

  8. I don't understand why you cannot be upfront about your condition. It's nothing to be ashamed of. It sucks. and it's sad but hiding it does you no good as it deprives you of a support system. People who can drive you at night to well lighted areas. You limit yourself.

Get second opinions by visiting an OPHTHALMOLOGIST not an optometrist. I think in specialist hospitals there must be some. Optometrists are only trained in recommending glasses, ophthalmologists are doctors.. Vitamin A supplements can help prevent further deterioriation

    1. Okoko, optometrist are the ones trained to deal with such issues bcos ophthalmologist cannot manage it. And there r specially trained low vision optometrist for it

My dear do ur research very well, Optometry is a 6yrs doctorate degree course and they are primary eye care providers,Opthalmologist is secondary ie surgery cases,ITK mtchewww!

  10. I have a cousin who has this and is doing just fine: what she does is basically try to get in early before its dark wen she is out alone as our country doesn't have a good electricity system, for emergencies she goes out with touchlight and buys phones that have ability to serve as atouch. She is also open abt this issue to her friends and boyfriend and they help her when they are out late. Sometimes we even joke abt it wit her but it doesn't make her lesser than us as she is a lovely girl and has accepted it as one of d rough roads we pass thru in life. U shldnt hide it frm ur friends dear. People shld take u for whom u are, if it were a bad character u can talk of changing it but dear this is beyond u. Take courage I love u!

  12. Dear girl,
I don't really suffer from night blindness but I have glaucoma which at times makes me blind at night. Do not feel depressed please. You have got your life and you have got God, let Him fill your life with His love and care.
I have checked out some home remedies which might help improve your sight at night, they are listed below:
    1. Eat Vitamin A rich vegetables - spinach for instance. Also take lots of oranges and sweet potatoes (cooked not fried) and carrots too.
    2. Taking smoothies and juices in the mornings too can help instead of salted breakfasts.
    3. Avoid foods and drinks that contain aspartame e.g Nutri C.
    4. Cut down on caffeine, coffee and soft drinks.
    5. Limit your use of seasonings like Knor cubes, Maggi cubes, Royco etc. And also the noodles seasoning too. This actually helps reduce the amount of refined salt in your body.
    6. I don't know if you know Bilberry, it's said to be good. You can try it too.
    Finally browse: usefuhomeremedies.com/nightblindness.html.

Do hope you find these helpful. God bless.
Also I'd like to say, talk about it. Stop hiding it. Don't be ashamed of it. In sharing it with people in your life (trusted people) you might find that special someone who will love you in spite of it.
Trust me, I shared a really dark past with my hubby and in spite of it, he's still here with me.
    God bless you.

  15. What you have is retinitis pigmentosa,my mum has it as well.It affects the rod cells of your retina which are responsible for night vision. It is really not as bad as you think.Although night time activities are restricted you shouldn't have any problems during the day.Thank God work and other important things are mainly done during the day.Cheer up.Would advise you take Vit. A supplements to slow down the progression.

  16. sorry darling, it must be hard....sadly our society is not one where you have a lot of support groups for stuffs like this.....keep praying and attending healing services and trusting God for healing for only him can make the impossible possible....
Another thing is if you don't find you can also start a support site online to create an avenue for people going through the same challenge to come together in naija here..you can do it....i have seen this happen abroad and it has helped a lot......also go online and research you might get helpful tips to help alleviate some of the challenges you face......lastly with God nothing is impossible, stay strong and keep fighting....

  17. My dear you need to visit an ophthalmologist or a good optometrist..during your eye examination, yours eyes will have to be dilated to check if there is any defect with your retina/macular...mostly people with retinitis pigmentosa have problems seeing at night;and yes there is no cure if that happens to be the case.what is normally prescribed is lots of vitamin A(retinol), Omega 3 (fish oil), you eat lots of carrots cos that is a good source of vit A and my lecturer in school then wiould normally tell the patients to use red oil to eat...raw one not the one that has been cooked with food.like white yam/plaintain with red oil.make sure the omega 3"fish oil" is pure "fish oil"..alternatively eating salmon fish.this will slow down the progression of the diseaseEating oily fish such as salmon 2 or 3 times a week can improve the efficacy of daily vitamin A palmitate and also slows down the progression of this disease/delay further vision loss.My dear you need to visit an ophthalmologist or a good optometrist..during your eye examination, yours eyes will have to be dilated to check if there is any defect with your retina/macular...mostly people with retinitis pigmentosa have problems seeing at night;and yes there is no cure if that happens to be the case.what is normally prescribed is lots of vitamin A(retinol), Omega 3 (fish oil), you eat lots of carrots cos that is a good source of vit A and my lecturer in school then wiould normally tell the patients to use red oil to eat...raw one not the one that has been cooked with food.like white yam/plaintain with red oil.make sure the omega 3"fish oil" is pure "fish oil"..Eating oily fish such as salmon 2 or 3 times a week can improve the efficacy of daily vitamin A palmitate (15,000 IU/day) and slows down the progression of the eye disease/delays vision loss.....It is well dear.

  20. hmmm take heart my dear, I hope this story will give u some hope and maybe happiness. Here it goes...
One of my uncles married a deaf and dumb girl, this lady is pretty, well proportioned, nice dentition and white teeth, with an infectious laughter and smile, sexy eyes, black beauty... they've been married for more than 7yrs now and have beautiful kids together, they attend public functions together... at first, family members were skeptical about him marrying a deaf and dumb girl, worried about how they'll communicate and train up children, but his undying love for her prevailed.

Why am I telling u this? it's because love doesn't count errors... God will surely send u a man and friends who will love u just the way u are.

They said it has no cure, but I believe in miracles, don't u? and pls know that God made u dat way for a unique purpose...
Stay positive, be happy and enjoy life to the fullest. Always remember, u did not create yourself.

  21. I understand what u ar going thru as i hav a cousin suffering from the same ailment. She avoids moving out at night and is very familiar with her immediate environment so can move around d house with ease even wen its dark. i advice u just pray nd leave it to God nd as for ur man, if its a serious rltnshp tell him nd let him knw u cant move out at night. if he truely loves u, he wont have a problem wit it nd will find a way around it wen there is an important nid to go out.
i wish u God's divine intervention my dear.

  22. So sorry to read about your problem, dear Poster. Pupil dilation is obviously not possible. I'm not a doctor but I know that any modern age surgery could be disastrous. Eat a lot of Vitamin A rich foods; fish, carrots, palm oil, fruits, vegetables, raw tomatoes. Your palm oil shouldn't stay long in heat when cooking. Eat a lot of Zinc rich foods too. These won't cure your ailment at all, but they'll improve your eyesight. Also try spending more time in a dark room with little light. It helps to exercise you retina rod cells.

Above all, pray fervently. If you have faith, nothing is impossible for The BIG GUY Upstairs. Be Blessed.

  26. @memphis that was obviously not a crucifixion,i had said i agreed with other points you made.you not being a doctor and giving false information is totally wrong,(the poster may now think pupil dilation is never going to be possible)you should have skipped that part if you aint sure.even eccentric pupils are dilated how much more a pupil that is equal, round and reactive to light and accommodation?...you sound intelligent, but i guess you are misinformed on that part.and pls i do not mean to sound rude if you understood it that way......

  27. My dear, i feel you,i also have this condition. i am total blind at night and bump into things during the day bvos of bad vision. I stopped learning how to drive bcos i kept bumping into things, i didnt want to kill someone or myself. Have been to several doctors and have been asked to come in for a laser surgery that may or may not work, it is not a cure just to help manage it. I hope a cure is found soon. i have learned to live with, get home before its dark and hang out with only friends who know about it. My boyfriend knows about it too, i believe if he loves you he would accept you totally, we all have baggaes.
