Table Etiquette - Please Dont Ignore This Post.

“Table Manners" is an aspect of everyday living that a lot of people take for granted yet it is very important.
I'm forced to finally do this post after someone’s  recent experience with a few friends during eating.she says it was horrible and she forgot to eat and was just staring at the others eat, each one with a ‘cutlery problem’…lol

Using ones eating fork to take some more food from the main dish instead of the serving spoon.?

Talking while chewing or when one still has food in their mouth and having particles fly out?.

Using spoon and fork instead of fork and knife…..ok in some special cases it is allowed to use spoon and fork when eating e.g spaghetti dish?

What about those who do not know where to place a table napkin? it is supposed to be spread on the laps right?

Proper way to use tooth pick?some people do not even know that they should use one hand to cover their mouth whilst at it.

Drinking water from the bottle at the dining table with strangers in public.?

Taking a mobile phone to the Dining table and answering it when it rings is wrong/right?

A female bank executive from Nigeria visited Germany and was at a restaurant and ordered for spaghetti and it took the restaurant staff to bring some order to her eating…she was eating with a knife and firm and could not curl the spaghetti round her fork…then she decided to cut it with the knife and in the process half of the spaghetti landed on her laps.

It was so obvious she didn’t know how to use her cutlery.

Lets discuss ‘table manners’ and I am sure a lot of use will learn a thing or two from this post on what to do and what not to do.

I know google is our friend but google isn’t there when people struggle with their cutlery.lol

If you have any funny tale of cutlery mis.use, please yarn us.

Problem with having right table etiquette and all sorts of right manners is that Nigerians tend to think your "forming" when u doing the right things. It's appalling

    1. Table etiquette is better taught with practically. If you work in corporate organisations please take a course in etiquette.
I remember my first date. It was with the first love of my life. This guy eats with proper cutlery even when at home. So it happened we travelled together and as soon as we arrived the town we were both hungry and decided to check in a new restaurant that just opened. His food came before mine

    2. I bless God for federal govt colleges in nigeria,(dunno if it's still so)dat was where I had to learn to use my sets of cutlery by force o!,first u have to come to d dining hall with ur complete set of cultery, else no entry, den u eat any and every meal with ur fork and knife at a restricted timing, once the time is up,u turn ur plates upside down whether u have finished eating or not!it was evil, see crying and hiding under table to finish food with either spoon or hand sef.chai!lol!...but I appreciated dat later in life cos if I were to learn it from home, wouldnt have been serious and probably won't see d need for it #no time!

    1. My thoughts exactly, let people eat the way they feel comfortable. Stop copying other people's culture. People from the Philippine eat everything with spoon and fork, we are used to spoons, so be it. The lady with spaghetti shudav just cut her food patiently without feeling the pressure from other diners staring at her, that's why she might have spilled the food. The funniest ones are so called big girls in Nigeria, don't get me started with them trying to eat burger or KFC with knife and fork .. abegi!! If I like, I use hand, all na belle e dey go. Just don't talk with your mouth full and you are good to go.. (no toothpicks in public oo, or use with discretion)

    2. It is wrong to pick your teeth in front of people (whether you cover your mouth or not)Always use the convenience.(Especially when you are in a formal gathering. If na owambe, na you sabi.)

3.Do not drink anything while your mouth is full (lest you drop food into your drink)

  51. Table manners are very necesary, they show that you are civilised. I experienced someone rinse his mouth with his drinking water as if he wanted to produce bubbles. Now to add a few tips, while picking your teeth, you have to cover your mouth with your other hand while loking down. Its considered offensive to look at peole while doing that. If its a three course meal, do well not to mix up the dishes thereby making your plate look like a dust bin. If you want to go all three courses, do so one at a time starting with a saucer or a plate smaller than that of the main course. It depends on how many cutlery sets are displayed on the table but always use the sharper knife for the bread (starter). Its not advisable to mix deserts, if you want a dry desert, go for cake or its like, if you want a sweetened desert, go for ice cream, if its fruits you want, then go for fruits, dont pack everything at the desert corner in one plate. Dont use a wine glass to drink water and vice versa. Say "excuse me" when you have to leave the dining table for what ever reason. Push in your chair when you are done and leaving the dining room.
    Gorgeous Miss.

  55. This is very enlightening! I had no idea That this was not a norm in Nigeria.
Now I may be a bit more careful before "abusing" somebody for eating incorrectly. Thanks!

...And to the person that asked.... if you are using fork alone, you use your right hand. If you are using knife and fork, knife in right hand and fork in left hand. It is then you use your left hand to out the fork in your mouth.

This is just the BASICS (learnt in nursery school).
it gets much deeper!...I guess the average Nigerian will freak out of they were sat at a table set for a 7 course meal.
if ever in that situation, just remember to start from the outside and work yourself in.

  60. In an age where innovation has turned every dominant believe over we still slave ourselves with table etiquette? please as long as you dont make a mess of your food or speak with your mouth full, every other thing as what to use spoon or fork for should no longer define anyone abeg.

  64. Nobody taught me how to use fork and knife when i first left Naija at the age of 16. I had to look at the way people ate in the school cafeteria to learn these skills. I went to a Federal Govt. School and nobody taught these skills. Fast forward 13 years later and this story is in my past. But i truly believe this is something that needs to be taught at schools. A friend who went to Adesoye college told me they were taught how to use cutlery. Money is a good something. :-)
