Anambra Government's Position On The Demolition Of Church Building/Anglicans' Protest‏

PRESS RELEASE:

Anambra State calls for Calm over Oyolu-Oze Primary School dispute

The attention of the Anambra State Government has been drawn to the demonstration which took place at Onitsha yesterday, August 18, 2014 over ownership of a primary school at Oyolu – Oze, Nkwelle – Ezunaka, in Oyi Local Government Area.

Government observes that the Nkwelle Ezunaka community and the Anglican Communion are locked in a dispute over the ownership of the said Oyolu – Oze Primary School.

On receipt of reports of destruction of property,His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano in the company of the Deputy Governor, Dr Nkem Okeke, visited the school site on Friday, August 17, 2014. His Excellency unequivocally condemned the wanton destruction of property by unknown persons.

Already, Governor Obiano had set up a six man committee headed by the deputy governor to investigate the contending issues and submit a report on their findings within two weeks.

Government observes that the Committee is presently only in the fourth day of its two week time frame to present a report and calls on all parties to allow peace and due process to reign.
As a democratic and law–abiding government, the administration of His

Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano upholds the right of peaceful protests by citizens. However such protests must be within the ambit of the law.
Government wishes to assure all citizens that it is committed to promotion of justice, peace and fair play and calls on all citizens to remain calm and law abiding.

Signed

Chief Tony Onyima
Hon Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism

Anambra State

  1. I knew a press statement would be released and a committee will be set up to look into it. Typical gov style.

  5. Stella u see why it's good to hear from both parties in a dispute before passing judgement. Some pple were already accusing the governor and the catholics for the destruction. Some were already cursing the governor for it whereas the issue wasn't from him.

  6. Catholics should liv politics n concentrate in preaching d gospel.Yrs ago when mission schools were returned to churches.Comprehensiv secondar school Nawfia is an Anglican school.yet catholics came there trying to build d statute of virgin mary! What does dis tell u?Obiano allowed himself to be used most unfortunately. After his damage control he shud rebuild d church.y didn't dis demolition happen durin Ngige,Etiaba or Peter regimes? Was d church build when obiano assumed office?Did d communual fight just start? He had get gud advisers kos obviously his aguleri dominated cabinet wil sink him.

I expect doz church fighters to blind fight. But if u can't answer d questions I raised.keep ur ignorance in check.

  14. Anon 8:59 AM Is the an Anglican church abi Catholic church?
I hope this committee will actually achieve something tangible cos most of the committees been set up in this country end up costing us more than the problem they were set up for.
    @ Patt...Seen? Yeah right

  15. Jst called my mum & she told me d fight is between Nkwelle Ezunakka R d Anglican church. Dt d Anglican church started building a church inside d school compound which did not go down well with d indigenes of Nkwelle Ezunakka.Even d Anglican bishop of Awka diocese was there with the Governor 2 calm d situation and they were shouting their own bishop down. Please it has nothing 2 do with the Roman Catholic Church. Mw my mum is an Anglican dnt think im taking sides.
