Breastfeeding Does Not Improve A Child's IQ

Breastfeeding does not improve a child's intelligence, despite the widespread belief that "breast is best" for IQ, according to a new study.
Scientists who conducted research on 11,000 British children found no reliable association between breastfeeding and higher IQ at age two.
Nor was breastfeeding related to improvements in intelligence as children grew up.

Previous studies have suggested a link between higher IQs and being breastfed. But there has been debate about whether such findings are skewed by the fact that those from less deprived groups are more likely to breastfeed.
The new research from Goldsmiths, University of London used data from the Twins Early Development Study.

The research project was set up to attempt to disentangle the impact of “nature and nurture” on children, involving identical twins, who share all the same genes, and non-identical twins.

Breastfeeding was associated with a small IQ advantage for girls at age two, but by 16 this had disappeared.
Writing in the online journal Public Library of Science ONE, the scientists concluded: "Breastfeeding has little benefit for early life intelligence and cognitive growth from toddlerhood through adolescence."
Study co-leader Dr Sophie von Stumm, from Goldsmiths, University of London, said: "Many researchers have previously investigated whether being breastfed in early life benefits IQ.

“However, few of the earlier studies have employed strong research designs that produce reliable results.
"Children - and adults - differ in their cognitive abilities, and it is important to identify factors that give rise to these differences. But comparatively small events like breastfeeding are very unlikely to be at the core of something as big and complex as children's differences in IQ.

“Instead, children's IQ differences are better explained by long-term factors, for example, children's family background and their schooling,” she said.
Researchers stressed that breastfeeding has other benefits – such as helping to build a child's immune system.
However Dr von Stumm said: "That said, mothers should be aware that they are not harming their child if they choose not to, or cannot, breastfeed. Being bottle fed as an infant won't cost your child a chance at a university degree later in life."

Previous studies have suggested a link between breastfeeding and intelligence.
Brazilian researchers who traced nearly 3,500 babies found that those who had been breastfed for longer went on to gain better scores in adult IQ tests.
Janet Fyle, from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said: "This is another research report among many studies on breastfeeding and child outcomes. While this study adds to an already existing body of knowledge about breastfeeding, our advice remains the same, breastfeeding has many positive benefits for a child's health and well-being in both the short and longer term.”

Alison Burton, maternity and early years lead at Public Health England, said: "As the authors confirm, breastfeeding provides the best nutrition for babies and helps protect against infections. PHE's advice is to breastfeed exclusively for the first six months. We recognise that not all mothers are able to breastfeed and infant formula is the only alternative to breast milk for babies under 12 months old."

Breastfeeding is just to feed a child to grow not to build the brain.

    7. PLEASE, DON'T BELIEVE THIS ARTICLE!!!
though the issue of Nature/ Nurture is still one of the most controversial topic in psychology. There are several factors that determines how intelligent or bright a child eventually becomes. This could be from inherited traits from the parents or grand parents (Nature) or environmental influences upon the child such as upbringing, school etc (nurture).
If breastfeeding actually help to boost immune system, then it could be very helpful for cognitive development as well. That is not to say that a child that was properly fed with breasts milk would automatically be bright without proper mentoring or training.
This article was probably sponsored by one of the big baby food companies in Uk to discourage Africans from breastfeeding their children so as to buy more of their products and eventually make their businesses thrive.
Education without common sense is lethal. It's only those who are forming porsh or trying to keep their Olympus from falling that will believe this article to the detriment of their children. It's even against our tradition as Africans not to properly breastfeed a child. Breastfeeding does not only build the immune system of a child or accelerate proper cognitive development it also creates a mother-child bond.
      GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

This probably why there are so many mental health issues with the white people..... Mental retardation, amnesia, brain cancer, brain tumor etc.
Their children only enjoy a perfect environment, institutions and organized system that further help them pick up eventually.
People always complain about the pathetic educational system in Nigeria but those who make second class upper in our universities that travel abroad to further their education end up becoming the best in their classes. You why? Because of an organized system over there and a well developed cognitive abilities (properly breastfed)

Intelligence is inherited which is the nature part. But any child that inherited intelligence from the parents is not going to have that higher IQ developed without proper mentoring. This is the reason you need to help you child develop properly cognitively by breastfeeding.

Exclusive breastfeeding was what WHO and other health organisations used to curb infant infections coming from the use of dirty water and improper handling of baby feeding things, coupled with the fact that some Africans could not afford milk for their new born babies.

So EBF not only made it possible for babies to get milk straight from the source without any form of infection,it also saved mothers few bucks!

Personally...I do it up to 3months and make sure we handle their bottles with utmost care...

      Delete
    2. Very good, ify. And because african mothers thought formula was sophisticated, they insisted on it even when they could not afford it. They used more water to make the tin last longer resulting in malnutrition. ..so I for one disagree with this study....till we become first world, breastmilk rocks!

  18. I agree as well. My little cousin was born prematurely (@7 months). She rejected breast milk from the beginning. My aunt kept crying because she thought there was something wrong with her milk. The little girl preferred her SMA gold and all the other formula she was on. She's 14 now and the smartest kid in her class.

I guess breast milk is good for the immune system of babies, it nourishes and protects them but I doubt if it has anything to do with IQ. If it did, then a large number of Nigerian children should be geniuses since most mothers here practise exclusive breastfeeding.

  29. Believe we read this thing properly, the write up said it increases female children's lQ from age two through adolescence ie 16yrs. So if it does anything at all to the female kids, that means it could possibly be doing something to the male kids as well. Moreover, breastfeeding creates a bond between the mother and her infant, it helps you the mother understand your child and as that child is sucking your breast he/she is also watching your face to know your mood. Breastfeeding is all about your child's development and growth. And please breastfeeding your child doesn't flatten your breast, you can always package yourself well if you know how to. Allowing your child suck your breast is even an antidote to cancer, so why deny them their God given food?

    ReplyDelete

  35. Researchers will always come up with new discovery every now and then. Were they not the ones who came up with the former that it improves a baby's IQ? Now this! I believe in doing what is best for the baby and mum. If you're a working mum, stick with more of formular when away n breast feed when you're around and if you're a full time housewife, then do exclusive or formular. Its all about what can work for a mother.

  40. Breast milk contains several substances that help the baby's brain and can increase the child's IQ over his bottle-fed peers.

It contains docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid that is important for the brain. The levels of this fatty acid in breast milk depend on the mother's consumption of omega-3 rich foods, such as fish and flax. The DHA levels are also highest in babies who are breastfed the longest.
Breast milk has cholesterol, which is needed to make nerve tissue in the growing brain.
Breast milk is high in lactose, which is broken down in the body into glucose and galactose, and galactose is a valuable nutrient for brain tissue development. We know from animal studies that the more intelligent species of mammals have greater amounts of lactose in their milk. Cow's milk contains lactose, but not as much as human milk. Soy-based and other lactose-free formulas obviously contain no lactose at all.
Taurine, an amino acid found in breast milk, is important to the brain development. This amino acid is low in cow's milk.
The breastfeeding process itself may also benefit a child's brain development because it varies more than the bottle-feeding experience, and because of a greater skin-to-skin contact.
You might say that you know someone who was breast fed and ended up less smart than someone else who was bottle-fed. Certainly that is true in individual cases, because there are many factors that affect individual's intelligence − not just breastfeeding. Genetic makeup, how the child is raised, and the nutrition after infancy play a big role too. The duration of breastfeeding matters also; nursing for a few months might not make such a difference as nursing till the child self-weans. So breastfeeding alone won't guarantee that your child will be some kind of Einstein, but it does have its effect.
