EFCC Arrests Amosu’s wife, recovers $1mn From Soakaway pit

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the wife of the immediate past Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Adesola Amosu (rtd) in relation to the ongoing investigation into the $2.1 billion arms procurement fund

Today.ng reports that Mrs. Lara Amosu was arrested last week in Abuja by EFCC operatives, adding that she has been in the anti-graft custody in Lagos since last week.
A source disclosed that Lara’s lawyer has been making attempts to secure her release but had not gotten any positive result.

She was arrested after the sum of N3 billion was traced to her bank accounts. The money is believed to be part of the sum her husband is being probed for.
The source further hinted that some properties belonging to the former CAS were also held in trust for him by Lara and her children.

There were earlier reports that the anti-graft watch dog discovered a whooping sum of N17.5 billion in the accounts of wives of three airforce chiefs. The monies were reportedly disseminated in various banks accounts.
A source acquainted with the ongoing arms probe disclosed that N13 billion was traced to the bank accounts of the wife of a retired Air Vice Marshal, who held strategic position in the Nigeria Air Force (NAF), adding that N1.5 billion was also discovered in the account of another serving senior officer. These officers handled the finance, budget and accounts of NAF.

The source said: “Shortly after Amosu was picked up in Abuja, his wife, Lara, was subsequently arrested. Investigations conducted showed that some of the monies the former Chief of Air Staff made through some contracts and procurements in NAF were traced to his wife’s accounts.
“About N3 billion was traced to the wife’s accounts while some assets acquired by the former service chief was in her name and some others in her company’s name.
“So, Lara is an accessory to a crime. The proceeds with her are from the arms funds. As we prosecute her husband, she must also be held accountable.”
It was gathered that the anti-graft agency pulled out the sum of $1 million cash from Amosu’s residence in Badagary, Lagos. The foreign currency was discovered when operatives carried out a search on the house.

The source said: “In continuation of the investigation into the arms probe, the EFCC operatives took Amosu to his residence in Badagry. After a thorough search of the residence, a fresh small ‘soakaway’ pit was discovered in the compound. The operatives suspected foul play, which informed the breaking of the ‘soakaway’. Surprisingly, $1 million was found in it. The money was subsequently confiscated.”

The EFCC arrested Amosu, Adigun, and Air Commodore O. Gbadebo two weeks ago over their involvement in the $2.1 billion arms scandal.
It was gathered that the EFCC flew the indicted officers to Lagos in an airforce aircraft. They were allegedly discreetly kept in a hotel. The EFCC mobilised the indicted officers to assets traced to them and suspected to have been acquired with monies gotten from the arms deal. The anti-graft agency had sealed off some of the said properties.

The Federal Government on November 30, 2015 directed the EFCC to prosecute the ex-CAS, who is also being investigated for over 10 NAF contracts totaling $930,500,690 awarded to Societe D’ Equipments Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd. between January 2014 and February 2015.

The probe panel disclosed that the contacts award letters show misleading delivery dates, suggesting fraudulent intention in the award process.
However, the EFCC had asked Amosu and others, who are still being detained over the $2.1bn arms deal, to refund some money or contract sums traced to them, but they have remained adamant.

    2. I work as an Aml analyst. I can tell u that this CANNOT happen in some countries. Transfer of money from PEPs would never go unnoticed. Pls if any bank is willing to employ me in Nigeria so that we can build a system that works. I'm willing. We need a full KYC/B review of all customers and business'
How can money be moving from acct to acct and the banks are not questioning the money/purpose.
      It's absurd!

    3. For the past 6 years we had an elite president,, we also had oil boom (with our oil selling at over 160 per barrel) yet nothing was achieved from that golden opportunity. Our Economy depended just on oil and we got this oil boom yet all we saw was looting, fund diversion, gate this, window that and so on.
Guess what? We have lost our opportunity. The price oil is flat at its minimum, we might never see an oil boom again,,, we are down. We lost a golden opportunity all because we had a government that is careless and corrupt.
We are still having fun now, from my calculations, things will get even worse and worse and soon the cost of paracetamol will rise to 3k for a sachet. Maybe dollars will be at 800 to 900. Most of us are busy calling Buhari,,, how do you think he can help a ship that has been punctured by 1 billion large holes to stop sinking?

My only regret is the fact that Buhari is not a military president. If he was,,,by now I know where we would have been. Desperate times like this calls for military measures but the rule of law has been used as a retarding force to further slow the process of this sanitation and allow the ship to keep sinking.
Unfortunately, the inhabitants of the ship are making merry and praising the culprits.
      We will realise soon.

    4. Fehinty , my dear this is Nigeria anything goes. That bankers and their managers should be persecuted too! Why? Because they created an enabling environment for corruption. I absolutely believe EFCC found the Million $ in a soak away built exclusively to hide that money. I don't care if PMB does nothing but put this corruption to rest, Nigeria I weep for thee!

  25. Bunch of thieves. How can one person hide so much cash at home. More prisons need to be built because there are many more people to be arrested. All former state Governors, Ministers, Director Generals, Permanent Secretaries, etc. Spare NO one. Seize all their assets. Enough is enough. Wicked and self centered people. Better Hospital or Schools sef dem nor build. Airports too, same story. I do not feel sorry or these people as the money stolen would have built very good Hospitals for us all.

  27. Since they know that these aforementioned persons cannot ordinarily earn this obscene amount of money and can authoritatively trace the money to the one meant for the purchase of arms what's stopping them from confiscating it and using it to boost the economy? Imagine one million dollars in cash when even mallam selling foreign currencies at presidential hotel cannot bring out twenty thousand dollars at once, I know this because someone I know tried buying just this last Tuesday but couldn't. Efcc should pls stop chasing shadows and start being forceful since these people never think twice about other persons before they looted the people dry, they too should begin to seize all the loot without following due processing since the process takes ages which is giving the looter time to device other means of covering their shady asses.

  30. So everyone is busy weeping for Nigeria. What about those men in arms who fought for your freedom and right to not be invaded by Boko haram? Men that were sent to fight a war with no ammunitions or weapons or adequate training against funded extremist? Those guys that died when they ran out of AMO in the field of Sambisa died because these gluttons you see here diverted the sum for training for weapons. These guys not only stole from Nigeria; they murdered those kids. If you are a woman and have no ounce of pity for those parents and moms that lost sons to the Boko haram war; then I pray you have no child in your days to call your own. I feel pity for the mothers who had their son sent to the guillotine and on suicide mission by their military heads knowing fully that the money intended to train these boys and fund their weapons has been secretly diverted into their personal accounts so that them, their wives l, their side chics and their kids can live a good life. What good life is there when the blood of our Nigerian soldiers are crying for Justice in the pit where they have been tossed? You are not only looters; you should be charged for accessory to MURDER. Murder of our innocent boys who went to fight because they believe in Nigeria and wish to protect our freedom to life, to peace, to liberty.
