A man in his early thirties was rushed to the ER at night. He was brought in on a stretcher. Some policemen came with him. He was unconscious and cold to touch. I actually thought he was dead.
On close examination, we noticed he was breathing but was shallow. The policemen said he was noticed to have stopped his car suddenly at the side of the road. Nobody noticed anything wrong till a street hawker noticed his head was on the steering wheel for a long time as he ran around hawking in traffic and the patient was drooling saliva. The hawker then called the traffic warden close by who alerted the police.
The policemen said a half filled bottle of Hennessey and some tablets were found in the car. They handed over the tablets to the doctor. They were diazepam and vicodin tablets. Apparently the guy was in pains or couldn't sleep and used the drugs to calm himself. Terrible combo!
His blood pressure was very low and his heart beat was so slow.
He had Fluids to rehydrate him and reduce the alcohol and drug toxicity in his blood, he had other medications too and oxygen therapy. His blood was taken for series of tests and particularly tests to check his liver function. After about 8hours in coma, he gradually came around.
He claimed he didn't know that it was dangerous to take alcohol with drugs. I count him extremely lucky to have been found in time. He said he was having severe back pain and took the drugs in the car and thought he could quickly drive home and sleep but suddenly blacked out. He claimed they were prescribed by a doctor.
Pain medications act as central nervous system depressants and have a more powerful effect on respiration when taken with diazepam. the opioid drugs can enhance the central nervous system depression of diazepam, making it more likely that the user will experience Slow breathing, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, cool, clammy skin, drowsiness, confusion, coma and death in severe cases.
Please, Its important that you don't combine drugs anyhow, let alone take drugs with alcohol or herbal concoctions. You might have two kidneys..but you have just one liver. Stay safe.

ReplyDeleteHmmmm how can one take drugs with alcohol though.... I've even stopped taking drugs with coke, I just mix milk and water then use it. Thank God for the hawker that was smart enough not to think that the man was just sleeping and drooling.
