President Buhari Showers Praises On Late Head Of State Sani Abacha

President Muhammadu Buhari has praised late military dictator Sani Abacha for his work in building infrastructure.

Speaking at the villa on Tuesday when he hosted the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO), led by Hameed Ali, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Buhari said that regardless of what anyone thinks about Abacha, it must be remembered that subsequent civilian presidents spent billions on naira in infrastructure yet have had little to show for it.

In a comment that appeared directed at former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Buhari specifically noted: “You know the rail was killed and one of the former Heads of State between that time was bragging that he spent more than 15 billion American dollars not Naira on power. Where is the power? Where is the power?” The President also spoke about the nation’s buoyant crude oil earnings in the past, compared to the meagre earnings during his administration, wondering why past governments ended up in debt rather than a deep purse.

He said, “I have to repeat what I want public to know here. Some of you may not have heard it. Either there is no power in your place or even in the television, I said and I challenge anybody to check from Europe, Asia and America. Between 1999 and 2014, Nigeria was getting 2.1 million barrels per day at average cost of $100 dollars per barrel. It went up to $143. So Nigeria was earning 2.1m million times 100 times 16 years seven days a week. When we came, it collapsed to $37-38 and it was oscillating between 40 and 54 sometimes. I went to the Governor of Central Bank; thank goodness I did not sack him; he is still there! I went with my cap in my hand but there were no savings, only debt.

“And you know more than I do the condition of the roads and some of them were not repaired since PTF days. No matter what opinion you have about Abacha, I agreed to work with him and the PTF road we did from here to Port Harcourt, to Onitsha, to Benin and so on... On top of other things in the institution, education, medical care and so on. You know the rail was killed and one of the former Heads of State between that time was bragging that he spent more than $15billion, not naira, on power. Where is the power? Where is the power? And now we have to pay the debts and this year and last year's budgets I took to the National Assembly were the highest in capital projects: more than N1.3trillion.

Let anybody come and confront me publicly in the National Assembly. What have they been doing? Some of them have been there for 10 years. What have they been doing? So, really, this country, luckily for me, I said it about eight years [ago] that we have no other country than Nigeria, we should remain here and salvage it together no matter what you have outside.”

  1. Buhari is the highest hypocrite and most corrupt Nigeria. After 20years of Abacha's death Nigeria still recovering his stolen money from foreign countries and this old fool is still displaying his stupid ignorance that Abacha is not corrupt. God used buhari to punish Nigerians for complaining about Jonathan same way he used Abacha. God pls forgive us.

    1. Buhari you're a big failure. What have you done for the masses? Absolutely nothing - the only thing you have done is cause a lot of suffering to the masses which is unacceptable. Why praise a leader if he does something good ? Isn't a leader supposed to better the life of the masses? But abacha enriched his pocket - he amassed a great fortune whilst president. Hopeless bunch of people!

    2. The suffering of the masses didn’t begin with this government. Even in my primary school days in the 80s! There’s always been suffering.

  4. Buhari is a small man.... A man who can't be honourable enough to accept his failures but blame others for his failures is not a real man... He forgot to mention that the billions Abacha stole if properly used would have made Nigeria a pride among the committee of nations.... If he built hospitals, why didn't you and your son Yusuph use them instead of traveling outside the country for treatment? For a ruler (not a leader) Who prides himself as an anti-corruption agent to come out and subtly praise a man who looted the nation blind, says a lot about him as well.

  8. But Abacha was actually a good administrator. He looted, yes, but at least 1 dollar was equal to 75kobo(less than 1 naira). He never licked the asses of the western world, he gave it to them hot and hard. Yes, he was a military ruler and therefore nobody expected him to act humane cos like Peak it's in them.

Buhari that is talking about Abacha should go and do his own, Abacha's loot is enough to construct 2nd Niger bridge, but the APC led government is yet to tell us what they did with the returned loot from Swiss. They should stop this blame game and sit up.

    1. Who is feeding you with lies, you talk out of ignorance.... During Abacha's regime 1 dollar exchanged for N80.00(eighty naira).

    2. Mhiz a, u said abacha was a good administrator? And you also want us to believe the economy was better then? Where do we start from sef, extra judicial killings, imprisonment without trials, no business opportunities, joblessness,no power,no water, impunity at his peak. Do u remember we had to resort to what we call 'abacha stove' at a point when having kerosene was a luxury? Abacha! May we never have another abacha IJN

    3. Go back and read my comment...I mentioned that Abacha was a military ruler and therefore nobody expected them to act 'humane'. U can check up the meaning of that if u don't know. Haven't u heard that the worst civilian administration is better than best military regime? So my dear, I still stand on what I said, Abacha gave it to the western world hot and hard, not all these lick asses we have now.
